The official synopsis for the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas Special has made its way to the internet. This year's episode is extra memorable for fans as it will be the last outing of Peter Capaldi as the Time Lord. The actor decided to step down from the gig at the end of season 10, with the holiday offering set to be his last go as the character. Capaldi will hand the post over to Jodie Whittaker. Behind-the-scenes, long-time showrunner Steven Moffat is also handing his TARDIS keys to his successor, Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall.

Since it will be Capaldi's final performance as the Doctor, fans have been naturally clamoring for details regarding the upcoming special. But information on the episode titled 'Twice Upon A Time', has been scant thus far with a couple more months before it rolls out. That said, the synopsis gives us some idea, although nothing too spoilery, as to what we can expect with this year's Christmas show and how Capaldi's imminent departure will factor into the narrative.

The synopsis comes from We Got This Covered, who spotted the leaked synopsis from the show's online store where a Blu-ray version of the upcoming episode was made available for pre-order. Since then, the post has already been taken down but it goes like this:

“Two Doctors stranded in a forbidding snowscape, refusing to face regeneration. And a British army captain seemingly destined to die in the First World War but taken from the trenches to play his part in the Doctor’s story. This is the magical last chapter in the Twelfth Doctor’s epic adventure. He must face his past to decide his future. And the Doctor will realize the resilience of humanity, discovering hope in his darkest frozen moment. It’s the end of an era. But the Doctor’s journey is only just beginning.”

Prior to inadvertently revealing the synopsis, BBC has already released a teaser for the episode which involves some pretty dark elements to it with both the First and Twelfth Doctor initially arguing about who the legitimate one is. But once they are forced to face a common enemy, the two learn to work together, although how their fates eventually pan out remains to be seen.

Over the last few iterations of the Time Lord, forced regeneration appears to have become the norm in Doctor Who. David Tennant's 10th Doctor famously did not want to go, while Matt Smith's version prolonged his stint as the Eleventh Doctor for as long as he could. Capaldi's Twelfth sounds to be going through similar steps, only this time, he will hand the baton to the first ever female version of the iconic character.
