Warning! Spoilers ahead for Amazing Spider-Man #73

In the latest issue of Marvel's Amazing Spider-Man, it's being teased that Doctor Strange will trade his soul to save his ally and fellow Avenger. It seems as though Peter Parker's past sins are finally catching up to him, and Doctor Strange could be his only hope to survive the darkness the demon lord Mephisto has prepared for him through his agent Kindred (aka Harry Osborn) and his desire for revenge. Furthermore, this could also potentially play a role in the Sorcerer Supreme's demise with the upcoming Death of Doctor Strange event.

In previous issues of Amazing Spider-Man, Doctor Strange has suspected that something dark has happened in Spider-Man's past that has tainted his soul, something that not even Peter Parker is aware of. Naturally, the Sorcerer Supreme learns about the deal Peter and Mary Jane made with Mephisto during the One More Day storyline, erasing their marriage and large portions of Spider-Man's personal history in favor of saving Aunt May. Furthermore, an additional catch to the deal was that it wouldn't be remembered by Peter (aside from unexplained feelings of guilt/shame). Now, recent issues have seen Doctor Strange confronting Mephisto himself about the corruption of Spider-Man's soul and this deal that was made years ago.

As their conversation has progressed over the course of multiple issues, Doctor Strange demands an end to the demon lord's games, having grown tired with the cryptic words and allusions to the deal that was struck with Peter Parker. Now, Amazing Spider-Man #73 from Nick Spencer, Zé Carlos, Carlos Gómez, and Marcelo Ferreira sees Mephisto prepared to make a new deal with Doctor Strange himself, and it might just save Spider-Man from Mephisto's demonic agent Kindred who's been tormenting the Webslinger, seeking to punish Spider-Man for the deal he made that he can't even remember. However, it's possible that this new deal to save Spider-Man's soul may just be what leads to the Sorcerer Supreme's own demise.

Mephisto's wager seems to suggest that Doctor Strange will need to corrupt his own soul in order to restore the virtue of Spider-Man's. However, given the variety and amount of dark supernatural threats Strange has had to face using all manner of methods and strategies to win the day, it's questionable that his own soul is all that pure. That being said, could this new deal lead to his soul becoming so compromised that it's a contributing factor for the upcoming Death of Doctor Strange event?

In any case, whatever Strange ends up doing, it's evident that he's likely going to have some hand in saving Spider-Man as Nick Spencer's run on the Webslinger's series comes to close. With Kindred closing in, Peter Parker is in for quite the reckoning. That being said, it looks as though Doctor Strange is determined to save Spider-Man in future issues from Marvel Comics, regardless of the possibility that it could result in his own corruption (and play a hand in his upcoming death).
