Marvel Studios has released a brand new Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer that hints at the introduction of another mystery character. Sam Raimi's upcoming comic book movie is already stacked with a brilliant cast led by Benedict Cumberbatch's Stephen Strange. There will be several returning MCU favorites, but Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will also see the arrival of a few more fresh characters.

The marketing campaign for the upcoming Marvel Studios blockbuster has been steadily going as its premiere nears. As the title suggests, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will see the titular MCU sorcerer travel through the multiverse. His upcoming adventure is set up by his involvement in Peter Parker's (Tom Holland) arc in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Aside from Doctor Strange, the sequel will also see the return of some familiar characters such as Wong (Benedict Wong) and Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen). Meanwhile, Xochitl Gomez debuts as America Chavez. However, she may not be the only new face in the sequel.

Marvel Comics readers will be familiar with the Living Tribunal as he's one of, if not the most powerful players in print. The three-faced entity is responsible for overseeing the Marvel universe's alternate dimensions, which makes his potential involvement with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness make sense. Interestingly, the Living Tribunal was also the one who ordered the Infinity Stones to be separated as a safeguard to not let one character wield all its powers again. The MCU may have not seen the Living Tribunal in live-action, but he was referenced in the original Doctor Strange film when Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) explains a weapon found in Kamar-Taj called “The Staff of the Living Tribunal” to then-neophyte Stephen.

Assuming that it is really the Living Tribunal, it's curious how prominent he will be in the movie. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness might be quite packed as it is. Adding a character as powerful and important as he is could backfire. In any case, even if it is just going to be a cameo, chances are that he will re-appear in future projects in the MCU. After all, Marvel Studios is known for playing the long game. Considering the Living Tribunal's role in Marvel Comics, this makes more sense than giving him a shoehorned role in the upcoming blockbuster.
