The Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer supports a big Phase 4 Scarlet Witch theory. The second trailer shows a lot more of Wanda Maximoff, both in and out of the Scarlet Witch costume she first wore in the Disney+ miniseries WandaVision, as Stephen Strange seeks her out to help against a multiversal threat. Yet, some of Wanda's remarks in the Doctor Strange 2 trailer, along with a few other key details, seem to be suggesting that she won't be quite as helpful as Doctor Strange hopes.

Wanda's story throughout the comics, as well as in the MCU, has repeatedly been one of loss. WandaVision emphasized the many sacrifices she has had to make in her life, and the miniseries ended with her sacrificing her own happiness once again in order to free the people of Westview. Although Wanda made some bad choices in WandaVision, she was not the show's villain, since she was initially unaware of how she created Westview's illusions and ultimately decided to give them up, even though it meant also saying goodbye to Vision and her children. Although she made the heroic choice then, some viewers have wondered if a truly villainous path was in her future.

The Doctor Strange 2 trailer suggests Scarlet Witch will turn to villainy in the movie. A scene in the first trailer shows Doctor Strange approaching Wanda on a cherry blossom farm as she acts very apologetic about her actions in WandaVision. However, both the farm and her regretful demeanor may just be another one of her illusions. The second trailer reveals Scarlet Witch facing Strange while he wears the same outfit he wore on the farm, and the trees from before had transformed into deadened husks. WandaVision already displayed Wanda's ability to produce powerful illusions — in the series' after-credits scene, a version of her innocently sipped tea outside a remote cabin while the Scarlet Witch studied the Darkhold at the same time, presumably to learn more about the multiverse and how she might get her children back. Showing a false version of herself, which hides her true intentions, would have become second nature by the time Doctor Strange 2 takes place.

In the trailer, she tells Doctor Strange, "You break the rules and become a hero. I do it, I become the enemy. That doesn't seem fair." Wanda has suffered heartbreak over and over throughout her life, and unlike some of the other Avengers, her pain has been somewhat downplayed in the movies compared to theirs. In WandaVision, she was even denied permission to bury Vision's body, and ended up all alone with her grief. Later in the Doctor Strange 2 trailer, Wanda comforts a grieving Scarlet Witch in Westview, presumably because no one else will. Wanda is the only person willing to be there for herself. Everyone has a breaking point when they cannot endure any more pain, and Wanda has endured more than most people ever will in a lifetime. It seems she's finally ready to push back.

The Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer supports a theory that Scarlet Witch will become a villain. Wanda Maximoff may have finally had enough of losing, and will start taking what she wants instead. It's unlikely that she would be the only villain in the movie considering its large cast of characters and what little has been seen of the plot, but moving forward in Phase 4 of the MCU, Scarlet Witch may not remain a hero much longer.
