In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of MadnessDoctor Strange and his allies faced their greatest threat against Wanda Maximoff, AKA The Scarlet Witch, who toyed with the multiverse to find a world where she could be with her twins. As a result, the MCU movie explored the ultimate weight of the multiverse mayhem, from the sheer spectacle of the different dimensions to the high stakes of multiverse incursions.

A significant element of the multiverse storyline introduced the multiple variants across the universe, such as the Illuminati and Wanda Maximoff. MCU's Multiverse of Madness brought forth five Doctor Strange variants, each presenting their individuality. Of course, each Doctor Strange variant demonstrated their talents in the Mystic Arts, proving that the wizard is formidable in any universe. However, some variants manifested the fullest extent of their powers that were essential for survival and defeating a common enemy.

Defender Strange

Defender Strange was the first variant to encounter America Chavez, and his ventures began with an attack by a demon in a space between dimensions. He has a more distinct look than the others with a long ponytail and a black and red suit. But despite his flashy aesthetic, Defender Strange is probably the least competent Doctor Strange variant manifesting his ultimate powers.

Although Defender Strange displays the typical talent for the Mystic Arts, his powers could not even contain a demon summoned by The Scarlet Witch. Much of his limited capabilities stem from poor decision-making, as he attempted to sacrifice America to consume her multiverse powers. Unfortunately, Defender Strange's meager powers were not enough for survival as he had one of the more violent deaths for an MCU character. But he did use the last of his energy to redeem himself and save Chavez before the demon reached her.

Sinister Strange

Sinister Strange resides in one of the darkest dimensions, in which his universe has undergone the incursion and is slowly decimating into pieces. It is revealed that he is being corrupted by the Darkhold, which explains this variant's selfish and reckless tendencies.

Sinister Strange has a musical duel with Doctor Strange-616, as both variants fought for the Darkhold. Sinister displays his brute strength as a formidable variant when he effortlessly counterattacks Doctor Strange-616's magical strikes. Of course, the explanation for his immense powers comes from the Darkhold. However, this was not enough since an uncorrupted Doctor Strange-616 managed to overtake Sinister Strange. As a result, Sinister suffers a brutal death, proving that dark magic isn't always the most powerful. Nevertheless, he was one of the bravest Multiverse of Madness characters.

Zombie Strange

A zombie variant of Doctor Strange uses his powers in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness.

Doctor Strange-616 utilizes a forbidden spell from the Darkhold to dreamwalk as Zombie Strange. This was the only way to reach Earth-616, foil the Scarlet Witch's plans, and save America Chavez. Of all the Doctor Strange variants, Zombie Strange was the most frightening in terms of appearance and power.

Thanks to Doctor Strange-616's quick thinking, Zombie Strange eventually became bound to the Souls of the Damned, which was essential to fight against the Scarlet Witch. Though his screen time was limited, Zombie Strange proved to be one of the most powerful variants to intimidate the Scarlet Witch and overpower her to save America.

Supreme Strange (Earth-838)

Supreme Strange is already dead when Doctor Strange and America arrive on Earth-838 and meet the Illuminati. However, flashbacks and recollections from his colleagues established the full potential of Supreme Strange and his immense powers.

Supreme Strange epitomizes the title "Supreme," from forming the Illuminati to searching for the mystic findings like the Darkhold and the Book of Vishanti. However, just like any Doctor Strange variant, Supreme Strange also had his flaws, in which his usage of the Darkhold accidentally caused an incursion. Even though the movie never showcases his powers on the big screen, Supreme Strange managed to explore the Mystic Arts in ways that Earth-616 had believed to be myths. Because of these rare accomplishments, Supreme Strange ranked as one of the most powerful Multiverse of Madness variants.

Doctor Strange-616 may not have explored the Mystic Arts in ways that Supreme Strange or Sinister Strange did, but that doesn't stop him from being one of the most powerful variants in the MCU. Even when there are chilling threats like Dormammu or the Scarlet Witch, Doctor Strange-616 displayed his creativity in fighting the enemy with his incredible tricks.

However, a showcase of skill does not define a variant's formidability — it's all in the execution. Much of Doctor Strange's ability to manifest immense power comes from his heroism and selflessness, a rarity among the Doctor Strange variants. He listens to his peers and understands when there are limits to his undertakings. Ultimately, much of his great power boils down to having the right mindset.
