There are a lot of reasons to be excited about Doctor Strange in the Multiverse, including the well-reasoned assumption that the sequel movie will feature many Marvel Cinematic Universe cameos. Due to its interconnected storytelling, one of the best things about Marvel Studios' franchise is its ability for its character to interact with each other. Over the last few years, the MCU has spoiled fans in this regard via their interweaving ensemble plotlines. Now, they're expecting something similar with the presumed appearances of many other heroes in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Production for the upcoming Benedict Cumberbatch-led sequel encountered a massive hurdle when its original director, Scott Derrickson, left the project due to creative differences with Marvel Studios. Soon, Sam Raimi was brought in to helm the project. Since then, the movie's filming quietly progressed, with reshoots wrapping up recently. Based on the movie's title, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will delve deeper into the concept of the multiverse with the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home directly causing Doctor Strange's next mission. Aside from its intriguing premise, which could define MCU's next few years, audiences are also looking forward to seeing other franchise characters in the upcoming blockbuster.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has assembled an impressive cast of characters. Joining Cumberbatch's sorcerer is his trusted ally, Wong (Benedict Wong), his former friend Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor), and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). The film will also debut a new hero in America Chavez (Xotichl Gomez). On top of this stellar ensemble, fans are expecting other high-profile MCU characters to pop up in the film. Granted that viewers have gotten used to seeing crossovers in the franchise before, it seems like they're fully convinced that Marvel Studios is staging a bigger surprise for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. There are a couple of good explanations for this. Firstly, the film's premise offers Marvel Studios the opportunity to bring in as many other Marvel characters with very little impact on their continuity. The movie will see the wizard travel through the multiverse, which means that he could encounter various variants. On the other hand, Marvel Studios could utilize this particular plot point to bring in new characters to the franchise, such as the X-Men.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Trailer

Doctor Strange has to surpass Spider-Man: No Way Home, which has set the bar when it comes to surprise cameos. The involvement of Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire - not to mention Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock/Daredevil - had been persistently rumored leading up to the threequel's release. But nothing could compare to seeing them appear on the big screen and sharing scenes with Tom Holland's Peter Parker. Spider-Man didn't even have to leave MCU’s Sacred Timeline to encounter characters from the multiverse. Given this, it's difficult to imagine that Marvel Studios won't fully capitalize on this opportunity to deliver great fan service by bringing variants of prominent characters, especially in their own blockbuster. They're in the process of establishing their multiverse anyway, so it could help fans get acclimated to the idea of various versions of characters from other realities.

Since Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness takes Marvel Studios' May release date, it is expected to be one of the biggest movies of the year. Typically, the MCU opens the proper summer blockbuster season with an Avengers film or something that features a bigger cast like Captain America: Civil War. Taking this into consideration, fans are hoping that the Raimi-directed sequel will follow suit in that regard.
