While it’s a gonzo Sam Raimi horror movie through and through, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness didn’t quite live up to the multiversal carnage teased by its title. The mind-bending Doctor Strange sequel is mostly set across three universes: Earth-616, the mainline MCU reality; Earth-838, a very similar reality with very different superheroes; and a world destroyed by an evil Strange variant where Wanda traps Strange-616 and Christine-838 in the third act.

Earth-616 is already familiar to Marvel fans and the universe destroyed by an incursion is too far gone to be spun off, but Earth-838 has a lot of promise for the future. From alternate castings to a new Illuminati line-up, Earth-838 could provide the MCU with a fun sandbox for multiversal what-if spin-offs.

Wanda-838

The Wanda of Earth-838 will have to deal with the fallout of her villainous Earth-616 self dream-walking into her body and slaughtering her universe’s most beloved and powerful superheroes. While the Earth-616 Wanda got corrupted by the Darkhold and made the ultimate sacrifice to destroy it, the Earth-838 Wanda is still a likable protagonist that audiences can root for.

This storyline sets up a possible second season of WandaVision following an alternate version of Wanda trying to keep her sons safe as she deals with the consequences of her evil variant’s actions.

Superior Iron Man

After casting John Krasinski as Reed Richards, Earth-838 is established as a sandbox for what-if casting. Tom Cruise was rumored to make a cameo appearance in Multiverse of Madness as Superior Iron Man, but that ultimately never came to fruition.

Whether he’s played by Cruise or not, it would be interesting to explore an alternate version of Tony Stark in a future MCU project (although Robert Downey, Jr.’s iconic original performance would be a huge hurdle to overcome).

The New Illuminati

Doctor Strange stands before the Illuminati in Multiverse of Madness

The Illuminati headquarters of Earth-838 is now empty, because the Scarlet Witch dream-walked into her other self and wiped them all out. So, the question remains, who will replace all the heroes massacred by Wanda-616?

It’s possible that Marvel Studios will just forget about Earth-838 and give Earth-616 its own Illuminati roster, or it could explore Illuminati storylines in an alternate universe with the team that replaces Xavier, Richards, and co. after the events of Multiverse of Madness.

Pizza Poppa

Bruce Campbell Cameo in Spider-Man 2

Regular Raimi collaborator Bruce Campbell made his expected cameo appearance in Multiverse of Madness with the role of “Pizza Poppa,” an Earth-838 pizza-ball vendor who gets robbed by America Chavez and then cursed by Strange. He returned in the post-credits scene, rejoicing as the spell has finally worn off.

Pizza Poppa is one of the most hilariously wacky side characters that the MCU has introduced to date. He could get his own spin-off, always on the peripheral of superhero action.

X-Men Without Xavier

Professor X appears in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Patrick Stewart’s Professor X died on-screen for the third time in Multiverse of Madness. After dying twice in Fox’s X-Men series, a variant of Stewart’s Charles Xavier had his neck snapped by the Scarlet Witch in the Doctor Strange sequel.

Now, the X-Men of Earth-838 will have to move on without Xavier’s leadership. A movie or series could explore how the X-Men deal with the loss of their de facto leader.

Sorcerer Supreme Karl Mordo

Upon arrival in the Earth-838 universe, Strange heads to the Sanctum to meet an alternate version of himself. However, when he gets there, he learns that Earth-838’s Strange is dead and the Sorcerer Supreme is actually Karl Mordo.

This version of Mordo isn’t perfect – he drugged and kidnapped Strange and America – but he’s far from the straightforward villain he is in the Earth-616 universe. He could have his own stories to tell. More Chiwetel Ejiofor is never a bad thing.

Captain Carter

Captain Carter discusses the Illuminati's murder of their reality's Doctor Strange, in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness.

A live-action Captain Carter project has been rumored to be in development ever since she was introduced in the pilot episode of What If...?. Those rumors have been bolstered by Hayley Atwell’s appearance as a Captain Carter variant in Multiverse of Madness.

It’s unlikely that a Captain Carter spin-off would revolve around the Earth-838 variant, because she got bisected with her own shield during the Illuminati massacre, but anything is possible in Marvel’s multiverse.

Christine Palmer At The Baxter Foundation

Earth-838 Christine Palmer in Doctor Strange 2.

While the Earth-616 version of Christine Palmer has been relegated to a one-note love interest role, the Earth-838 version seen in Multiverse of Madness actually gets in on the action.

She works at the Baxter Foundation as the multiversal expert in charge of naming realities, including her own. This Christine could be used to flesh out the MCU’s multiverse from a non-superpowered perspective.

Wesley Snipes As Black Panther

Wesley Snipes, victorious, as Blade.

Tom Cruise as Tony Stark wasn’t the only what-if casting rumored for Multiverse of Madness; Wesley Snipes was also expected to play a variant of Black Panther. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Snipes tried to get a Black Panther movie off the ground in the 1990s.

Snipes ended up paving the way for the MCU with the Blade franchise instead. He ultimately didn’t end up appearing in the Doctor Strange sequel, but the Earth-838 universe could provide Snipes with a second chance to play a version of T’Challa.

A Fantastic Four Family Sitcom Starring John Krasinski’s Reed Richards

John Krasinski as Mr Fantastic in Doctor Strange 2 in the Multiverse of Madness

In his showdown with Wanda, Krasinski’s Reed already confirmed that he and Sue Storm have kids in the Earth-838 universe. Krasinski has mastered two types of story: he nailed half-hour comedy with The Office and he nailed genre-driven family drama with A Quiet Place.

A Fantastic Four sitcom with a focus on family would combine the two. It could play like Married... with Children with superpowers.
