Batman and Spider-Man composer Danny Elfman will score Sam Raimi's upcoming  Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Elfman has scored some of the biggest films, dating back to 1982. Elfman's debut score for a major studio was Tim Burton's Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. His collaborative relationship with Burton would continue throughout the years, with Elfman scoring Beetlejuice, Batman, and Batman Returns for Burton.

Elfman has also worked with Raimi in the past. The composer worked on both Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2. Elfman and Raimi's relationship soured between Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3, though. The pair mended the relationship, though, and collaborated once again on 2011's Oz the Great and the Powerful. Elfman's most recent superhero venture was 2017's Justice League, on which he replaced director Zack Snyder's desired composer, Junkie XL. With this latest news, Elfman reenters the MCU after scoring Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015.

Elfman told Inverse that he was set to score the Doctor Strange sequel. He revealed that he is prepping some pieces that will be played on set during filming. Naturally, Elfman is sworn to secrecy when it comes to details on the film, but he did say that he will begin scoring the movie in just a few months.

I am starting to do bits of pre-work for Doctor Strange 2 that Sam Raimi's directing. Even though I don't start it for some months, there's bits of recorded music they need for the sets.

The fact that Elfman plans on working on the film in a few months is a good sign that filming on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness may be back on track. In January, Elizabeth Olsen revealed that filming on the sequel in the UK had been paused because of a rise in COVID cases. With production also set to take place in New York City, Los Angeles, and Vancouver, production is likely ongoing somewhere, hence the need for Elfman's onset pieces. What's most interesting about Elfman's return is its implications, though.

With the MCU set to break open the Multiverse in Phase 4, Elfman's work on the film could signal that Raimi is looking to emulate his Spider-Man films in more ways than one. The untitled Spider-Man: Far From Home sequel is rumored to be bringing back Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man. That film is set for a December 2021 release date, just a few short months before Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters in March 2022. It seems like Marvel is gearing up to reintroduce Maguire's Spider-Man, and that is likely to factor into the Doctor Strange Sequel, which will have massive implications for the MCU in the future.
