Warning: Includes Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness SPOILERS!

Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool was considered for a cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, according to writer Michael Waldron. Deadpool has long been one of Marvel's most popular characters, and Ryan Reynolds' movie franchise with Fox only increased demand for him. The two Deadpool movies were big box-office hits for the studio, and 20th Century's acquisition by Disney created a big question about the Merc with a Mouth's future. Marvel Studios is confirmed to be developing Deadpool 3 with Ryan Reynolds, which will bring his R-rated superhero to the Marvel Cinematic Universe at last.

In the years since Disney bought Fox, there has been great speculation about when and where Deadpool could make his MCU debut. Early concept art for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings teased the idea of him making a cameo in the film, but it was never seriously considered. The Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness story raised a new possibility for where Deadpool could appear. One of many Doctor Strange 2 X-Men theories suggested the movie could use the multiverse to permanently bring Deadpool to the MCU, since Reynolds' character previously existed in the Fox X-Men franchise.

While Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is loaded with cameos, Reynolds' Deadpool is not one of them. During a new interview with ComicBook.com, Waldron was asked if he, director Sam Raimi, and the Marvel Studios team considered using him. He confirms that Deadpool was considered for Doctor Strange 2, but notes the movie never felt like the right place to feature his first MCU appearance:

Yeah, we talked about it. I think we talked about everything in this movie. So, [it] would've been crazy to not raise that, but it ultimately didn't feel like... It just didn't feel the right place. But yeah, of course we talked about it.

Deadpool doing a thumbs up in Deadpool 2

Based on how Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' story unfolds, it is difficult to see where a Deadpool cameo would have fit. Wade Wilson would not work as a member of Earth-838's Illuminati team, even though Patrick Stewart's Professor X, John Krasinski's Mr. Fantastic, and other Marvel cameos came here. However, it would possibly have been fun to see Deadpool as another prisoner of the Illuminati, as he could've been in a glass cell like Doctor Strange and America Chavez. Other than this, the only other place for Deadpool to be in Doctor Strange 2 that wouldn't be completely random would be a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo as Strange and Chavez fall through the multiverse.

It is likely for the best that Deadpool wasn't in Doctor Strange 2. The movie certainly could have found a fun way to include Reynolds' character, but it is hard to imagine he wouldn't feel forced. With Marvel Studios hard at work on Deadpool 3 after hiring director Shawn Levy, it really won't be that long before Deadpool makes his way to the MCU in one way or another. Perhaps the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness - like an incursion - will even be used to explain his sudden arrival in a new universe.
