Marvel Studios actually filmed Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange wearing the Iron Man suit in Avengers Infinity War, according to Clerks creator Kevin Smith. The second anniversary of the Joe and Anthony Russo-directed flick is slowly approaching, making some fans nostalgic. The film is currently available on Netflix for streaming until it debuts on Disney+ this summer, which means fans can easily revisit it.

Setting up the stage for last year's Avengers: Endgame, Infinity War brought together all pockets of the MCU in the hopes of stopping Thanos (Josh Brolin) from his villainous plan. That meant seeing characters who hadn't met each other before finally coming face-to-face, that included Doctor Strange and Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), who, despite being both New York-based, hadn't met yet until that point. The pair, albeit few bickering here and there, worked together for most of the film.

As seen in various concept artwork for Infinity War, Doctor Strange and Iron Man were supposed to switch costumes at one point in the movie. That idea never made it to the film's theatrical cut, despite being filmed as Smith recently said in the latest episode of Fatman Beyond YouTube show (which has since been switched to private). He said that the photo was shown to him and co-host Marc Bernardin by film's writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.

"There's footage or a photo of Robert Downey Jr wearing the cape that came out long before Infinity War came out, so we know they shot it. We know personally that they shot it because when the writers (came and spoke to us at the house before they left they were like 'You wanna see something?' And they pulled out the phone and literally showed us, not just a drawing cause that's what's going around the internet is there's a drawing and it looks badass, but they showed us f***in Sherlock in the Iron Man f***in suit man. Like wearing the suit, with Tony standing next to him wearing the cape, and we were like 'WHAT THE F***,' and they were like 'We can't say, never talk about it.' Then it's out in the world and I'm like 'We saw that photo!' It looked badass."

In the behind-the-scenes trailer for Infinity War, there's a split-second shot of Downey wearing Strange's Cloak of Levitation, giving fans hope that it would be a moment in the movie. Obviously, that wasn't the case. There was no shot of Downey in the cloak, although he did have some fun interactions with it. Meanwhile, Cumberbatch wearing the Iron Man suit has never been seen, people only know of that thanks to concept art. It's unclear how this armor switch would've panned out on the big screen, but given Downey's background with the cape, it seemed like it was going to be part of the Titan action set-piece against Thanos. What prompted it and how it would've worked remain mysteries for now.

Based on Smith's comment, does that mean that Cumberbatch was wearing a practical Iron Man suit? Fans know that Tony Stark's armors have been fully CGI-ed, with Downey essentially wearing sweats on set, so it's curious how they shot Strange in one of his armors in Avengers: Infinity War. Fans would want to see the image Smith was talking about in the video, but whether or not it will ever see the light of day is unknown. However, if he says it exists, chances are that it's only a matter of time before it makes its way online.
