Spoiler warning: This article contains spoilers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness presents the two most powerful sorcerers in the MCU using every spell imaginable. Doctor Strange and the Scarlet Witch unleash all their power and experience against each other in the fight over America Chavez, with some attacks in the movie drawing directly on some of the best Marvel Comics spells.

The best Marvel Comics spells allow magic users to defend themselves and stop others, including The Vapors Of Valtorr, a spell Strane uses frequently. Other spells generate far more massive consequences for the entire Marvel Universe. The Scarlet Witch nearly destroyed mutants with a single sentence in House of M, and she saves them forever in The Trial of Magneto with perhaps the best spell ever in the comics.

The Vapors Of Valtorr

Doctor Strange uses the Vapors of Valtorr in Marvel Comics.

The Vapors of Valtorr obscures light and casts everything around it in mist and shadow, making it an effective spell for magic users. Doctor Strange uses this spell frequently, as he did in Doctor Strange #15 against evil demons.

Other sorcerers use this spell for evil means, including Baron Mordo. Mordo deployed the spell to blind Strange in Strange Tales #125, an early battle between the two from the 1960s, but the Sorcerer Supreme countered it with relative ease.

Mists Of Munnopor

Doctor Strange casts the Mists of Munnopor in Marvel Comics.

Another spell with similar shadowy properties causes havoc in Strange Tales #154. Doctor Strange not only blinds the demon-like birds attacking him, but he also turns their wings to lead, proving this to be one of the best Marvel Comics spells in one quick panel.

Strange journeys to the depths of the Dark Dimension to rescue Clea, held captive by her uncle, Dormammu. Doctor Strange shows he belongs among the most powerful magicians in the Marvel Universe in this issue, using every spell he can to rescue his friend.

Chains Of Krakkan

Clea uses The Chains of Krakkan in Marvel Comics.

Comic book fans know Clea stands alongside Strange as a powerful sorcerer. Clea uses The Chains of Krakkan to bind her opponents in mystical chains in Doctor Strange #45, a humane spell that restrains possessed people without harming them.

The Chains of Krakkan resemble spells Doctor Strange uses in the MCU. He unleashes mystical chains and binds against numerous opponents, including Thanos and the Scarlet Witch, though in some cases, they involve other powerful Marvel Comics spells.

Images of Ikonn

Doctor Strange uses Images of Ikonn in Marvel Comics.

Strange uses Images of Ikonn in issue Doctor Strange #183, confusing his foes by creating numerous mirror images of himself. The Images of Ikonn confound all but the most powerful mystics, making it a highly effective defense for the Sorcerer Supreme.

This use of mirror images recurs throughout Marvel Comics and in the MCU. Strange relies on a spell similar to the Images of Ikonn against the Scarlet Witch when she infiltrates Kamar-Taj in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, momentarily slowing her progress.

Pentagram Of Farallah

Doctor Strange uses the Pentagram of Farallah in Marvel Comics.

The Pentagram of Farallah requires five people to work together to teleport people incredible distances, making it a great Marvel Comics spell. Doctor Strange worked with Spider-Man and Silver Sable to use the spell in Avenging Spider-Man #8.

Non-magically inclined people can participate, adding to the spell's fun and potential. So far, the spell remains in the comics, but the MCU could make fun use of it, especially as Doctor Strange routinely interacts with characters with no experience in magic.

Black Priest Spells

Black Priest Doctor Strange speaks spells in Marvel Comics.

Doctor Strange sometimes acts as a villain in Marvel Comics and as a Black Priest, he achieves unimaginable power. With a word, he creates, alters, and destroys reality. The Black Priest spells allow the user to do virtually anything they will.

The Black Priest spells go far beyond any typical magic user reciting a phrase or using an object. These spells exist in arcane symbols ingrained into the user, which then allows them to create magic simply by speaking an ancient and powerful language.

No More Mutants

House of M Scarlet Witch

With a single sentence, the Scarlet Witch cast a spell with devastating consequences. She erased the majority of mutants in the Marvel Universe simply by saying "No more mutants," endangering their existence and altering the course of the comics for years.

House of M counts among the most important Marvel Comics events for many reasons. The spell Wanda uses to alter reality in order to be with her twin sons heavily influenced her story in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

One More Day

Mephisto bargaining for Peter's marriage in Marvel Comics.

The Scarlet Witch erases 98% of mutants from reality in House of M, but Mephisto erases Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson's marriage from canon in One More Day. This spell undoes decades of continuity and remains in place nearly twenty years later.

The spell's power and consequences make it one of the best in Marvel Comics, but it's also controversial. Some fans still dislike the fact Peter and Mary Jane lost their marriage and personal history, though the two have gotten back together since.

Creating Billy And Tommy

Scarlet Witch holds her newborn sons in Marvel Comics.

Comic book fans know Billy and Tommy Maximoff exist as magical constructs. The Scarlet Witch used her hex powers to create life in a way that foreshadows much grief and hope. Her spell cast life into the world in a way virtually no other Marvel Comics spell ever did.

Wanda inadvertently created her sons, leveraging pieces of Mephisto's souls, but that doesn't alter the outcome. Despite the fact Mephisto reclaimed his lost soul fragments and the boys seemed to vanish from existence, they later reincarnated as Wiccan and Speed.

A Mutant Afterlife

The Scarlet Witch creates a mutant afterlife in Marvel Comics.

Losing her children sent the Scarlet Witch down a dark path, both in the comics and now in the MCU. She rectified her misdeeds in Marvel Comics at least by casting a spell to create a mutant afterlife, forever preserving the souls of the people she once hurt.

This terrific act goes even further than that. Mutants possessed the ability to resurrect themselves after death thanks to Cerebro backing up their minds, but this only worked for those alive during its invention. Those lost before, like Thunderbird, were thought forever lost. Wanda resurrected them and all mutants ever as well, giving back to the people she once hurt so badly.
