Doctor Strange Director Confirms Long Undiscovered Easter Egg

Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange in Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson validates a recently founded Groundhog Day reference in his 2016 Marvel film. James Gunn may be the king of Marvel easter eggs, but acclaimed horror filmmaker may give the Guardians of the Galaxy director a run for his money in hiding fun callbacks.

In Doctor Strange, Strange's wristwatch is significantly important to him, and he continues to wear it despite the fact that it no longer tells time. And while audiences already got a good look at Strange's broken face and non-working hands, moviegoers may have overlooked a cheeky reference hidden within those hands. Finally, after more than a year, an eagle-eyed viewer has finally discovered that easter egg.

On Twitter, Scott Derrickson quoted a post from a user with the handle @TimDLydon who cites that Strange's freak car crash actually took place on Groundhog Day. His wristwatch, which presumably stopped after it was also wrecked (and submerged in water) during the accident, was set to February 2nd, just a bit over quarter past five. Fans are obviously amused by the fun bit despite the fact that the easter egg has always been there, just waiting to be discovered.

I’ve waited two years for somebody to notice this.

The confirmation couldn't come at a better time, at least this year, as the information arrived during the holiday. Rooted from the superstition that if a groundhog emerging from its burrow on this day sees a shadow due to clear weather and retreats back to its den, it only means that the cold winter weather will continue for at least six more weeks. However,  if he does not, the spring season is almost upon us. While the accuracy of the predictions is still questionable, Groundhog Day remains to be a popular and fun celebration in North America. In fact, it's even the premise of the Bill Murray's Groundhog Day. Interestingly, in retrospect, Doctor Strange has similar elements with the 1993 classic as both films feature time loops.

Strange's ability to manipulate time will be helpful in Avengers: Infinity War where he will finally join the bigger Marvel Cinematic Universe in the fight against the Mad Titan Thanos (Josh Brolin). While audiences didn't see much of what he can do in the first trailer for the movie, he's expected to be a significant factor in the overall narrative, especially since he possesses one of the mythical Infinity Stones - the Eye of Agamotto, aka the Time Stone. But he may not be able to simply turn back time in every encounter with Thanos' Black Order.
