Warning: spoilers ahead for Amazing Spider-Man #53.LR!
In the latest issue of Amazing Spider-Man, Doctor Strange is assisting the Order of the Web in finding Spider-Man, whose been taken by the terrifying villain Kindred. As the Sorcerer Supreme leads the Spider heroes through the Astral Plane in the hopes of tracking Peter Parker down, they're quickly attacked by monstrous and demonic manifestations of Spider-Man's nightmares. Many of the demons bring the Ghostbusters films to mind, especially for Spider-Girl, though Doctor Strange makes short work of these supernatural entities, proving that if he was in those films, they'd be a whole lot shorter.
In prior issues, Spider-Man has been trying to stop Kindred, who had corrupted and turned all of his Spider-allies into Spider-Demons. Kindred set them loose on the city to wreak havoc before eventually turning them on each other with the intention that they would tear each other apart. However, a desperate Spider-Man makes a deal with Kindred, giving his life for theirs. Seeing as how that's exactly what the demonic foe wanted to hear, he doesn't hesitate to release his hold on the other heroes before instantly snapping Spider-Man's neck, killing him on the spot. Kindred then made off with Spider-Man's body, resurrecting him to torture him even more, and Peter is still being held captive.
Now, Amazing Spider-Man #53.LR from Nick Spencer, Matthew Rosenberg, Federico Vicentini, and Takeshi Miyazawa sees the freed Order of the Web looking to get their friend back. They get help from Doctor Strange venturing down the same path Spider-Man took on his own through the mystical Astral Plane. Upon entering a region made up of Peter Parker's dreams, they soon come face to face with Spider-Man's darkest nightmares.
This includes a massive monster version of Kingpin who, according to Spider-Girl, looks like the classic Stay Puft Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters. She's also quite proud of herself for picking up on another opportunity to reference the same film not five minutes later, when a demonic Mary Jane enters channeling the film's possessed Dana. Despite these infernal intrusions, Doctor Strange easily combats all of the demons by himself, realizing Mary Jane is a fake at a glance after explaining this isn't even his first time in this specific part of the Astral Plane. When the Order of the Web say they can't leave because Strange needs their help, he brusquely insists he really doesn't, sending them on their way.
Had Strange been dropped into Ghostbusters, he shows that not only would the movie have only lasted for five minutes, it would have only had one main character. Venkman, Spengler, Stantz, and Zeddemore could've kicked back with a beer and left their proton packs at home knowing the Sorcerer Supreme was on the job. Still, for Marvel fans, it's a nice surprise to see Doctor Strange tackle a supernatural problem with such ease; he is the Master of the Mystic Arts, after all. Demons, monsters, and the supernatural are pretty much his bread and butter.
