Warning! Spoilers for Death Of Doctor Strange #1 below

Marvel Comics has just killed Doctor Strange, as the longtime Sorcerer Supreme was murdered in the Sanctum Santorum. In the first issue of The Death of Doctor Strange, readers learn that Stephen Strange dies after being stabbed through the heart. His shocking death leads to more questions than answers and leads to a surprise face making a return to the Marvel Universe.

Marvel has been teasing The Death of Doctor Strange miniseries for the last couple of months, revealing the magical hero would meet his end in the miniseries. Strange has been at an odd place in the comics, as he hasn't had his own series since his six-issue miniseries, Doctor Strange: Surgeon Supreme, was canceled in August of 2020. However, with the character set to play a massive role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe - and the fact he's one of the publisher's most beloved and iconic characters - Marvel Comics seems to be giving the character a soft reboot, beginning in the recently released The Death of Doctor Strange.

In The Death of Doctor Strange #1 by Jed Mckay, Lee Garbett, Antonio Fabela, and VC's Cory Petit, the Sorcerer Supreme has a day much like many others. However, after finally relaxing in the Sanctum Santorum after a day chalked-full of magic battles and teaching at Strange Academy, Strange receives a knock on his door. After greeting an unknown person at the door (noting it's odd to see them), he's told its his last day. Strange is shown fighting against someone with inconceivable power that "should not exist." The fight ends with Strange getting stabbed and killed by the mysterious assailant.

Doctor Strange Death Marvel Comics

Strange's death causes a ripple effect across the Marvel Universe, as its greatest heroes and sorcerers feel his demise. Without Strange, the Earth's mystical barrier disappears, as multiple extradimensional attacks are launched at once. As heroes try to figure out what happened, Wong sits over Strange's dead body, crying over the loss of his greatest friend. As they grieve, Doctor Strange from the past (Steve Ditko's version) arrives to help solve the case.

Marvel Comics really just killed Doctor Strange. However, the emergence of another Strange from a different timeline softens the blow. The question remains: who is responsible for killing Stephen Strange? Who will replace him as the Sorcerer Supreme? And how will the Marvel Universe (and Multiverse) react now that one of its greatest protectors has been killed? The Death of Doctor Strange #1 is in comic book stores.
