Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange hits theaters on October 28th in some overseas territories - before making its way to the U.S. on November 4th. Reactions from early screenings of the film have now started making their way online, thus capping off years of hype and speculation surrounding a project that could end up giving rise to another film franchise that is part of the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In particular, early praise has been heaped on Doctor Strange star Benedict Cumberbatch and Tilda Swinton - who play the title character and his mentor The Ancient One in the magical superhero movie, respectively. The pair have now engaged in a most unusual Q&A session for the film too - one based around the game of Jenga.
In a video clip posted to Facebook (see below), Cumberbatch and Swinton answer questions submitted by fans that are selected in a unique fashion befitting the bizarre world of the film they're promoting; namely, the questions are printed on Jenga tiles. A popular party game, Jenga involves players taking turns removing a series of identical wooden tiles from a rectangular stack; the objective being to remove as many as possible, without causing the stack itself to collapse (marking one as the loser). In this variation, the actors were additionally asked to answer whatever fan question was printed on each freshly-liberated piece.
Swinton, who says that she has not played the game before in the clip, reveals (among other tidbits) the answer to the eternal question of "kittens versus puppies" - landing on the "kittens" side. Perhaps more substantively, she also names the 16th Century French philosopher and essayist Michel de Montaigne as the person she would most like to meet, if she was able to use one of The Ancient One's space/time-transcending portals in real life.
Cumberbatch, meanwhile, responds to a query about what (if any) scientific principals he might have picked up while making the film (a movie that blends conceptual sci-fi ideas with occult mysticism and spiritual ideas) by expounding about quantum physics and the idea of mutliple universes and realities. While the MCU has already established that alternate dimensions and cosmic spaces exist within its framework (see the introduction of the Quantum Realm in Ant-Man), Doctor Strange is expected to add different states of being (that is, a "multiverse" concept and potentially even versions of the afterlife) to the mix, too.
