Warning: contains spoilers for Midnight Suns #2!Clea - the new Sorcerer Supreme following Doctor Strange's death - is making an enemy out of the entire Marvel Universe. Since assuming the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme, Clea has shown just how different she will be from her predecessor, being both more proactive and more abrasive. In Midnight Suns #2, Clea is made aware of a great magical threat on the horizon, and takes matters into her own hands, alienating potential allies in the process.

In the recent Death of Doctor Strange, Doctor Strange, before passing on, bequeathed the title of Sorcerer Supreme to Clea, his former disciple and lover. Clea has been a very different type of Sorcerer Supreme, owing to her harsh upbringing in the Dark Dimension, of which she is also Sorcerer Supreme. Whereas Doctor Strange saw himself as a doctor, Clea presents as a warlord protecting her domain. Recently, readers learned that Clea was not happy with the X-Men, due to their discovery of the new element Mysterium, which has anti-magical properties. Now, Clea has a new fight: a dark and ominous threat is coming, and somehow the Midnight Suns - Magik, Wolverine, Spirit Rider, Blade and Sister Grimm - are involved. Clea will do anything to stop it, even if it means alienating the rest of the Marvel Universe.

The Midnight Suns have just fought Doctor Doom, who makes a hasty retreat this issue, telling them they do not know what is coming. Clea then arrives, thanking the Midnight Suns for their service but then asking them to leave. Clea has had a vision of the forthcoming doom, and it involves the Midnight Suns. Magik, incensed over Clea’s attitude, berates the Sorcerer Supreme, telling her that the Midnight Suns’ presence in the vision means Clea cannot shut them out. Clea cuts Magik off, telling her she has made a good point - but instead of recruiting the Midnight Suns, she teleports them to a different dimension, rationalizing it on the grounds that if the Suns are gone, then the threat may be neutralized. The Suns, aghast at being sent away without their consent, suddenly find themselves powerless in a horrifying realm.

Clea Isn't Here to Make Friends

At the rate Clea is going, she will not have many allies left in the Marvel Universe. Clea vowed to be a different kind of Sorcerer Supreme, and she has lived up to that promise, taking a more proactive approach to fighting evil. However, she doesn't have the same bonds with Marvel's heroes as her predecessor, and they're beginning to notice that their own heroism doesn't factor into her plans. Clea has spent much of her life waging a guerrilla war against the Dread Dormammu, leaving her with little patience for seeking out compromise, even with her allies. While Clea clearly respects the Midnight Suns' abilities, her response still risks their lives, and she does it without regret.

Offending the Midnight Suns may not have been the wisest course of action, especially if there is indeed a great evil on the way. The Midnight Suns will inevitably return, but now they may be way less willing to work alongside the Sorcerer Supreme. Worse, with Clea recently criticizing the X-Men's mysterium, Wolverine may decide to pass on the news that she can't be trusted to respect Krakoa's laws or borders. While she may be getting way more done than Doctor Strange did, Clea is also playing with fire by treating Marvel's other heroes like they're enemies.
