Benedict Cumberbatch wants to keep playing Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as long as his story is good. He made his MCU debut in 2016's Doctor Strange and quickly became an integral part of the MCU as Phase 3 concluded. Cumberbatch returned for a small role in Thor: Ragnarok and then took on a prominent role in Avengers: Infinity War. It was that appearance that elevated Doctor Strange to one of the MCU's best characters for many viewers, which only increased excitement in what his future could contain.

Shortly after Avengers: Endgame brought Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange and everyone else back from Thanos' snap, Marvel confirmed that he'd finally star in a solo sequel. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was expected to be the next appearance of the arrogant former surgeon, but first, he's set to play a significant role in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Phase 4's multiverse storylines indicate that Strange could be one of the most important MCU heroes moving forward. Even with two confirmed appearances on the horizon, that hasn't stopped questions from rising about Strange's MCU future.

Benedict Cumberbatch is now out promoting his new Netflix movie The Power of the Dog, which features an awards-worthy performance from Cumberbatch. During a recent interview with USA Today about the movie, the star was also asked about his MCU future. He didn't close the door on more appearances after Doctor Strange 2 in his response. Cumberbatch said, "As long as the character is interesting and challenging and doing fantastic things in the MCU, why not?," when asked about playing the Sorcerer Supreme again.

Doctor Strange knocks Spider-Man's spirit out of his body in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Cumberbatch addressing his MCU future as Doctor Strange wasn't the only Marvel talk to come from this interview. He also answered questions about Spider-Man: No Way Home's story and Strange's involvement in it. However, Cumberbatch dodged these inquiries by revealing he didn't read Spider-Man: No Way Home's full script. He's only aware of the scenes that involve Doctor Strange and purposefully did this so he didn't learn any spoilers.

It is a bit premature to speculate about Doctor Strange's MCU future, especially since Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is at the beginning of six weeks of reshoots. The new scenes filmed here could completely change how Strange's story was meant to unfold. There will be a bit more clarity in a few weeks once Spider-Man: No Way Home hits theaters and audiences learn exactly what Doctor Strange is up to. But with the MCU only beginning to scratch the surface of its magical characters and stories, Cumberbatch should have plenty of opportunities to play Doctor Strange again in compelling MCU stories.
