Warning! Spoilers ahead for the WandaVision finale.

WandaVision's ending and post-credits scene set up Scarlet Witch's next appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Marvel Studios' inaugural Phase 4 project has now wrapped up, effectively ending the Maximoff Anomaly. After saying goodbye to Vision and her kids, Billy and Tommy, in Westview, the hero's next MCU appearance will be opposite fellow magic-wielder, Stephen Strange.

Marvel Studios delivered a climactic final battle in the final episode of WandaVision titled "The Series Finale." Following Agatha Harkness's revelation that Wanda was using Chaos Magic for the Hex, making her the Scarlet Witch, the pair engage in a magic battle, while Vision and White Vision simultaneously fought elsewhere in Westview. In the end, Wanda accepted reality and bid her conjured family goodbye. Before more authorities came to investigate what happened, she quietly left and went into self-imposed isolation in a remote cabin as seen in the post-credit scene.

As the ending of WandaVision, Marvel Studios answered almost all pressing questions from the show to properly wrap it up. But as this is only the beginning of Phase 4, it also planted several plot points connecting its events to a string of future projects. The most obvious one is Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness since Scarlet Witch is confirmed to return in that sequel.

What Did WandaVision's Ending Mean For Scarlet Witch?

Following Agatha's revelation about Wanda using Chaos Magic in WandaVision's penultimate episode, the hero didn't have nearly enough time to process what she'd learned and continues to learn about herself. But as she and her family were threatened by the villain, she didn't have any choice but to speed up the process, ultimately embracing her new persona as the Scarlet Witch and defeating Agnes. Eventually, the Hex came down, and after bidding Monica Rambeau goodbye, she left town. Despite accepting her fate and newfound knowledge about herself, she still needs guidance and training to fully understand her powers. As Agnes said, Wanda has limited access to resources to learn how to properly control her magic. So Wanda turned to the Darkhold, Agnes' dangerous book of spells, potentially knowing that she's learning mostly dark magic.

Whether or not Marvel Studios pits Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange against each other is still uncertain at this point – it will all depend on how Wanda reacts to him potentially reaching out. Considering what she went through with Agnes, it would make sense if she were apprehensive of him or anyone else who tries to get near her. During the final battle, Agatha mentioned how Wanda is more powerful than the Sorcerer Supreme, who is expected to be Doctor Strange as foretold by the Ancient One in Avengers: Endgame. The villain also revealed Scarlet Witch's destiny is to destroy the world, and if she goes down the path of fulfilling this, Doctor Strange and the Masters of the Mystic Arts who are tasked to protect Earth from mystical threats will have to stop her. In the end, however, they might have to come together to fight the true villain of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. In the best-case scenario, Doctor Strange can even be the proper magical mentor that Scarlet Witch really needs as he learned magic in a more traditional way.

How WandaVision's Post-Credits Scene Sets Up Doctor Strange 2

As with their films, Marvel Studios also used the WandaVision post-credits scene to set up Doctor Strange in the Multiverse Madness. Admittedly, this was expected considering that Wanda is confirmed to appear in the Sam Raimi-directed sequel, but instead of simply having a more straightforward connection like Doctor Strange popping up, the setup is more subtle. In the post-credits scene, Wanda was revealed to be studying the Darkhold; in the comics, it has a collection of dark magic spells collected by the Elder God of Chthon. Some of its pages were copied into the Book of Cagliostro which played a pivotal part in the original Doctor Strange film; it featured rituals focused on the dangerous side of mysticism leading some of the students, like Kaecillius, down a dark path. It's also worth noting that she was going through the book the same way Doctor Strange studied other mystical texts in his origins story — by letting her astral form do the work while she goes about her day.

This effectively makes her more dangerous, and if not kept in check, could inadvertently wreak more havoc than she did through the Maximoff Anomaly. As news of what happened in Westview spreads, it will inevitably reach the Sanctum Sanctorum if it hasn't already. But it's likelier that by the time Doctor Strange hears of what happens in New Jersey, Scarlet Witch will have already been settled in that secluded cabin in the middle of nowhere. But as she becomes more powerful through the teachings of the Darkhold, Doctor Strange could ultimately track her down - particularly if her magic causes a rift in the multiverse that's brought to Strange's attention.

WandaVision's Post-Credits Scene Hints At Doctor Strange 2 Villain

WandaVision Scarlet Witch Nightmare MCU (1)

WandaVision's post-credits scene also sets up the debut of Nightmare — the long-rumored villain of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. In the sequence, while Wanda was busy going through the Darkhold, the voices of her twins called to their mother for help, seemingly from a distance. It's unknown where exactly they were, but while it wasn't shown on the screen, it was implied that Billy and Tommy also disappeared when the Hex in Westview came down, just like Vision did. During the final battle when Wanda opened up barriers enclosing Westview, the boys started to disintegrate just like their father. Considering the many references to Nightmare throughout WandaVision, the souls of Billy and Tommy might be held in the Dream Dimension by the antagonist.

Vision and Wanda didn't tell Billy and Tommy what was happening in Westview when they tucked them in bed after their harrowing day fighting Agatha, but it's worth noting that like his mother, the former can read minds, so he might have known that something was happening and used his magic to get him and his twin to survive outside of the pocket reality. The parting scene of the WandaVision stinger saw Scarlet Witch closing the Darkhold with a determined look on her face to find her kids. Assuming they really are trapped by Nightmare and he is revealed to be the primary antagonist of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it's a big enough reason for Scarlet Witch to come together with Doctor Strange and take on the mystical villain.
