How WandaVision’s Twins Shaped Doctor Strange 2's Story

In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, WandaVision's Billy and Tommy become integral to the fate of reality itself, and their existence in Earth-838 is a clue at just how much power resides in the Scarlet Witch of prophecy. Indeed, the inclusion of Billy and Tommy in the Doctor Strange 2 cast is Wanda's primary motivation for nearly tearing apart all of reality. However, these boys are technically not the same twins that were featured in WandaVision.

Wanda Maximoff gives birth to Billy and Tommy inside the WandaVision Hex, which Wanda created through Chaos Magic so she can live out a fake sitcom-like reality inside the town of Westview. After dealing with Agatha Harkness, Wanda disables the Hex, releasing Westview's residents and forcing Wanda to say goodbye to her entire family, including Vision. The post-credits scene shows Wanda living in a remote cabin and studying the Darkhold. Wanda hears the familiar voices of Billy and Tommy asking her to help them, causing her eyes to glow, which is how WandaVision ends. After being corrupted by the Darkhold, Wanda attempts to kidnap Billy and Tommy from an alternate universe in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, ultimately leading to Scarlet Witch's death at her own hands.

Doctor Strange 2's Wanda death scene not only implies that no one but Scarlet Witch can truly destroy herself, but it also punctuates the movie's temporary conclusion to Billy and Tommy's fate. Wanda finding the twins under the care of an alternate reality version of herself in Earth-838 - the same family she created from her own imagination - indicates that Wanda was already unknowingly tapping at the doors of the multiverse during WandaVision's Hex. Furthermore, considering Wanda's history of imparting powers or awakening the abilities of those that come into contact with her Chaos Magic, as well as the respective fates of William and Tommy in Marvel Comics, it's unlikely that the twins' time in the MCU will be as short-lived as Doctor Strange 2's Mister Fantastic. Here's how Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness brought back the twins, and how they could become crucial players in Phase 4 or Phase 5 of the MCU.

How Doctor Strange 2's Multiverse Brought The Twins Back

Doctor Strange 2's concept of the infinite multiverse allowed Earth-838's Wanda, Billy, and Tommy to enter the MCU, and it also implies that WandaVision's Billy and Tommy could still be alive. Created by Chaos Magic, WandaVision's twins disappeared with the Hex, but the existence of Earth-838 Billy and Tommy reveals Wanda's natural connection to the multiverse, as her dream of having twins turns out to be a window into another reality. One location from Marvel Comics where Scarlet Witch's twins could be found after WandaVision is the Dream Dimension, one of the many alternate dimensions in the comics that is under Nightmare's control. In the MCU, future explorations to this dimension could be enabled by Stephen Strange's incursions, America Chavez's powers, or any other character who can somehow dream-walk. The Dream Dimension is where humanity's dreams manifest and take on a life of their own. Billy and Tommy are not traditional versions of dreams, but as products of Wanda's imagination brought forth with Chaos Magic, they could conceivably still exist here. As the twins exhibited their own powers and some control over reality, it's possible that their consciousness survived after the Hex.

In fact, there there are technically infinite versions of Wanda, Billy, and Tommy that exist out in the multiverse, and this could all be tied to the prophecy about Wanda either ruling over or destroying the world. Doctor Strange 2 focused entirely on Wanda's quest to steal Billy and Tommy from Earth-838 Wanda. However, this could just be the first step to the eventual fulfillment of the Scarlet Witch prophecy.

Wanda’s Love For The Twins Could Be The Key To The Scarlet Witch Prophecy

Wanda's quest led to the slaughter of not just Doctor Strange 2's Illuminati, but of anyone who stood in her way, nearly fulfilling the prophecy about Scarlet Witch ending the world. This ultimately results in Wanda killing herself and bringing down Mount Wundagore, destroying all versions of the Darkhold across the multiverse. However, this might not be the end of the Scarlet Witch nor of the influence of the Darkhold. As Wong explains to Wanda, the Darkhold was created by Chthon, the MCU's first demon. In Marvel Comics, Chthon is not the first demon, but he is an Elder God of Chaos and Earth's first black magician. Most importantly, Chthon gave Wanda her powers in the comics - mainly for the purpose of using Wanda as a vessel for his return. So far, Chthon hasn't appeared in the MCU series and films, and is only present through Doctor Strange 2's easter eggs and other references to his name. So, even though all versions of the Darkhold have been destroyed, Chthon could still be out there somewhere, and he could still use Earth-838 Wanda as his vessel for fulfilling the prophecy.

Scarlet Witch's mad quest for her twins and her eventual demise could just be the first steps to the rise of Earth-838 Wanda, who became in tune with Chaos Magic after she was possessed. Just as Wanda's powers grew with every traumatic event in her life, her attempts to kidnap Billy and Tommy could similarly inspire Earth-838 Wanda to seek out power, driven by the need to protect her kids from the dangers of the multiverse. Because of Wanda's love for her kids, she destroyed herself, but Earth-838 Wanda can still become the Scarlet Witch of MCU prophecy.

Do Wanda’s Twins Have An MCU Future?

As seen in the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ending, the twins are safely with their mother in Earth-838 - but after Wanda, Billy, and Tommy were exposed to Chaos Magic, the twins could become major MCU heroes or villains. This is supported by the Marvel Comics origins of the twins, whom Wanda creates by unwittingly summoning two pieces of Mephisto's soul. The ancient demon Mephisto later reabsorbs the twins, driving Wanda insane, which loosely resembles Wanda's arc from WandaVision to Doctor Strange 2. That's not all: in the comics, Billy and Tommy gain powers and respectively become Wiccan and Speed, who later join the Young Avengers. This story arc is referenced in the MCU through the twins gaining similar powers as well as Billy and Tommy's Young Avengers-inspired WandaVision outfits. The twins even gain the ability to grow older at will, a side effect of the fact that they were created through Chaos Magic. All this could be a setup for Earth-838's Billy and Tommy to become the MCU's respective versions of Wiccan and Speed. That said, considering the twins' terrifying MCU origins, they could lean more towards becoming Avengers-level threats instead of Young Avengers.

Doctor Strange 2 is unlikely to be the last audiences see of Billy and Tommy, as the twins have been irreversibly exposed to Chaos Magic, and WandaVision's Billy and Tommy could still exist in some alternate dimension. Just like the multiverse itself, there are infinite ways for the twins to make their comeback and finally flex their powers. As they are natives of Earth-838, Billy and Tommy could return alongside the MCU introduction of the X-Men, whose existence was confirmed by the appearance of Doctor Strange 2's Professor X. The twins - both from Earth-838 and WandaVision - could also have a connection with the other individuals whose powers were either awakened or imparted by Scarlet Witch's Chaos Magic, such as Monica Rambeaux or White Vision. Meanwhile, as Cassie Lang will be returning in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and Kate Bishop already stars in Hawkeye, the twins could become part of the Young Avengers. However, if the MCU finally reveals Mephisto or Chthon, Agatha: House of Harkness could continue the twins' dark future. In any case, Billy and Tommy are bound to return.
