Warning: SPOILERS for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness!

Elizabeth Olsen teases Scarlet Witch's future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Since joining the MCU during Phase 2, Wanda Maximoff has seen her role continue to increase. She played a prominent role in the conclusion of the Infinity Saga, returned to star in WandaVision on Disney+, and now stars opposite Benedict Cumberbatch's Stephen Strange in Doctor Strange 2. The latter marks her seventh MCU appearance (including post-credits scenes) and gives Scarlet Witch a truly villainous turn.

The plot of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness follows Doctor Strange as he attempts to protect America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) - a teenager with multiverse-traveling powers - from Scarlet Witch. Following the events of WandaVision, where Scarlet Witch loses her kids and acquires the Darkhold, she wants to take Chavez's powers for herself, so she can travel the multiverse and be reunited with Billy and Tommy. This story puts Wanda Maximoff front and center for much of the multiverse sequel, but her MCU future is much more unclear.

Now that Doctor Strange 2 is out in theaters around the world, the cast and crew are starting to speak up about some more spoilery aspects of the film. This includes Elizabeth Olsen briefly teasing Scarlet Witch's MCU future during an interview with Extra. She addressed what comes next for Wanda Maximoff while at the New York premiere of the movie. While Olsen doesn't get into specifics about what will happen next, the actress teases that there are several directions for where Scarlet Witch's story could go. And instead of sharing her own ideas for what that could be, Elizabeth Olsen wants to hear where fans want her story to go.

There’s a couple different versions of what could happen at the end of this film. Mostly, I want to hear what the fans who know her best, what they would like to see from her next.

Scarlet Witch in Doctor Strange 2 Trailer

The Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ending creates plenty of questions about Scarlet Witch's MCU future, primarily because the Sam Raimi-directed film appears to kill her. During the climactic final battle between Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange, Wong, and America Chavez, Wanda comes to realize the error of her ways. She then decides to destroy the temple of Chthon on Wundagore mountain. The building crumbles around her and Doctor Strange 2 doesn't show her escaping, with Strange even implying that Wanda didn't survive. However, the movie not explicitly showing her death creates some flexibility for Marvel to bring her back.

As for where Scarlet Witch's MCU future could go from here, her actions in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will firmly entrench her as an MCU villain or anti-hero going forward. This could mean that she has a long redemptive story ahead of her, but Scarlet Witch could also lean into the villainy and corruption of the Darkhold. Elizabeth Olsen has long expressed interest in a House of M-type story for Scarlet Witch, so that could potentially happen now. In any case, it would be quite surprising if Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness really was the last time audiences see Wanda, especially with the multiverse possibilities.
