New art for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness teases how Doctor Strange's team travels through the multiverse. Marvel Studios has slowly teased the possibilities of the multiverse in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for years, and the Doctor Strange franchise helped lay the foundation for other realities and dimensions. Other Phase 4 properties might deal with elements of the multiverse prior to Doctor Strange 2's release, but it is clear that the film is where the MCU's magical beings will collide to save the multiverse.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness sees Benedict Cumberbatch return to play the future Sorcerer Supreme, and he'll be joined by Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda Maximoff after her transformation into Scarlet Witch in WandaVision. The movie also includes Wong (Benedict Wong) and Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and is rumored to include multiple other magical characters. The only one confirmed for Doctor Strange 2 is America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), who has strong ties to the multiverse herself. Based on new art for the highly-anticipated sequel, she is the one who will enable the characters to travel through the multiverse.

The wrap gift for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now circulating online and giving MCU fans the first real look at what the sequel contains. The art showcases the new suits that the main characters have and provides the first look at America Chavez. As noted by Doctor Strange 2 Updates on Twitter, Doctor Strange, Wong, and Scarlet Witch are shown in front of Chavez's signature star-shaped portals. If this is an accurate representation of the movie, the art hints that these portals are how the team travels through the multiverse.

America Chavez has multiple powers in the comics that range from flight, super strength, invulnerability, cosmic awareness, and these star-shaped portals. She creates and smashes the portals to open up gateways to different universes. This is why she seemed to be a natural character to include in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Instead of the movie showing America accidentally travel to the MCU's main timeline with these powers, this art suggests that she's the catalyst for the film's multiverse-traveling plot.

Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch theoretically could have powers to create portals to other universes, but Marvel might not give them such abilities in Doctor Strange 2. America's star-shaped portals are unique and give her a specific role to play in the movie. Strange, Wanda, and Wong are powerful sorcerers who can deal with the various threats that the team encounters, while America can eventually prove that she's more than just a way to travel the multiverse. In fact, the comics have shown her use these abilities to travel through time too, so America's portals could have multiple purposes in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
