A recent Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer rumor has been seemingly debunked by Disney's head of marketing. Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is in full swing, and there is plenty of content coming for audiences to enjoy. By the end of 2021, viewers will have seen Hawkeye's finale and the highly-anticipated sequel Spider-Man: No Way Home. However, even with these upcoming sources for entertainment and new MCU content, many are already looking ahead with curiosity to Doctor Strange 2, titled Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Benedict Cumberbatch returns as Doctor Strange after an appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home to lead his own sequel. The movie has suffered significant delays like the rest of Marvel's Phase 4 slate due to COVID-19, which means Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness won't hit theaters until May 2022. The additional wait is excruciating for some, especially those who want to see Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), who is set to appear in the sequel, again after WandaVision. The result of the anticipation is a growing desire to see any glimpse of footage from the movie, leading to speculation about when Doctor Strange 2's trailer could be released.

Now that Spider-Man: No Way Home is days away from hitting theaters, the release of the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer is a big topic of discussion. This led to Cinema Reviewed and Big Screen Leaks sharing that audiences will see the first Doctor Strange 2 trailer as the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: No Way Home. The rumor quickly spread across the internet and generated excitement, which now seems to have been misplaced. Walt Disney Studio's President of Marketing Asad Ayaz responded to the Twitter rumors with a sense of confusion by simply saying, "What," seemingly debunking the claims. Check out his response below:

Under normal circumstances, it would be easy to believe that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' trailer could be attached to Spider-Man: No Way Home. Cumberbatch's sequel comes out six months after Tom Holland's third solo Spider-Man movie, which is traditionally when Marvel drops the first trailer for a new movie. This usually happens pre-release so the trailer can be featured in the previews, but Doctor Strange 2's connections to the ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home could explain a post-credits release instead. Ultimately, a potential post-credits scene connection is what has made the rumor so easy to believe. However, Ayaz deciding to respond to the theory as he did indicates that it isn't true, unless his confusion is simply over the details of what the trailer contains. That said, it's unlikely this would ever warrant a response from Disney's head of marketing.

Even if the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer isn't released as Spider-Man: No Way Home's post-credits scene, it will only be a matter of time before it does come out. The sequel's May 2022 release date is rapidly approaching, and the cast and director Sam Raimi will reportedly be done with significant reshoots on Doctor Strange 2 by the end of the year. That means that Marvel Studios should share the first look at Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness sooner rather than later. In the mean time, however, Doctor Strange's role in Spider-Man: No Way Home will likely give fans some very big clues as to how the long-awaited sequel may play out.
