Loki creator Michael Waldron opens up about why working on the script for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was so much fun. Waldron's rise to stardom began with his work on Adult Swim's Rick and Morty, having written the acclaimed season 4 episode "The Old Man and the Seat" and even being offered the position of showrunner for season 5. However, he took a different path as Marvel Studios met with the writer to hear his pitch for Loki and subsequently hired him to be head writer for the series.

His partnership with Disney wouldn't stop there as Waldron was tapped to script Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which he elected to start from scratch with director Sam Raimi to form their own vision rather than work off of original writer Jade Bartlett's script. As production continued on the film, this past January brought news that Waldron had signed an overall creative deal with the House of Mouse and signed on to write the untitled Star Wars film from Marvel's Kevin Feige. Though the back-to-back nature could have been exhausted, Waldron isn't ready to slow down.

In anticipation of the premiere of the Stephen Amell-led series Heels on Starz, Waldron caught up with CinemaBlend to discuss the sports drama as well as his recent work in the MCU. Having been tapped to write the Doctor Strange sequel while getting ready to be on set for production of Loki season 1, Waldron describes how 2020 became an even weirder year as he spent the rest of it on Zoom meetings with Raimi developing the script for the film, but found the process to be "a blast." See what Waldron said below:

"I got to be in London for five months at the top of this year making that movie. So yeah, it was great. It was really fun to go from from Loki straight into Doctor Strange. It was a totally different thing, you know, making a show about a villain to making a movie about a hero. It was good, and felt like I got to work completely different muscles. And then just getting to be on the set with Sam Raimi, there's nothing cooler than that."

Sam Raimi's return to the superhero genre, namely the world of Marvel after his beloved Spider-Man trilogy, has been a point of excitement for many fans since its announcement, making Waldron's own enthusiasm to work with the director on the script understandable. Though Marvel's non-stop chain of production cycles doesn't create much surprise that Waldron was pulled so quickly between projects, it's encouraging to see how energetic he remains. It's also interesting he describes working on the Doctor Strange sequel as getting the opportunity to flex new creative muscles.

Given Loki featured plenty of comedic moments and interdimensional shenanigans as much as existential drama and world-building, the series proved to be a good transition point for the Rick and Morty alum into the MCU. With Elizabeth Olsen already promising Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to be the scariest Marvel film to date, the anticipation is high to see what Waldron and Raimi have crafted together for the long-awaited sequel. The film is currently set to hit theaters on March 25, 2022.
