Benedict Cumberbatch reveals he is still taking part in reshoots for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Cumberbatch made his MCU debut back in 2016 in Doctor Strange, in which he portrayed the titular sorcerer. The British actor has since appeared in Thor: Ragnarok, two Avengers films, and he played a significant role in Spider-Man: No Way Home. The sequel to Doctor Strange, titled Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, is directed by Spider-Man alumnus Sam Raimi and is scheduled for release in less than two months time on May 6th.

Cumberbatch's Stephen Strange has become an increasingly central figure in the MCU as it expands and progresses forwards through Phase 4. With WandaVision, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and now Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the franchise is set to explore the limitless possibilities of the MCU multiverse through the near future, with Doctor Strange being a key character. Although the film first began shooting in 2020, Raimi confirmed in January 2022 that it was undergoing reshoots before initial test screenings.

Now, in an interview at the BAFTAs (via Twitter use SmilingBenedict), Cumberbatch has revealed that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is still undergoing reshoots in March 2022 despite its imminent release date. While giving a short interview before the awards ceremony, the actor dropped the fact that he had been in LA to continue work on the film. The actor didn’t comment on the nature of the reshoots, but made it clear that they were ongoing and that he was directly involved. Check out the full quote below:

“I’m having a very nice time [in LA] doing reshoots for Doctor Strange”

Doctor Strange looking serious in Multiverse of Madness

Cumberbatch’s reveal will be sure to raise some eyebrows. While it isn’t uncommon for the team behind a big-budget film to keep working on it until its release date, it is usually seen as a sign that the film isn’t progressing as smoothly as originally intended. Earlier in the year, Raimi had confirmed that a final cut of the film had been created, and that further Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness reshoots would be completed as necessary depending on the reaction at test screenings. However, the fact that reshoots are still continuing now could mean that those reactions weren’t as positive as Raimi would have hoped for.

Despite how it initially looks, the reshoots don’t necessarily mean that the film is in trouble. Their lateness could be a result of scheduling conflicts, or simply final adjustments to small details in the film. Following on from the immense success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, there will be an unusually high pressure placed on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, so Raimi will want to ensure that every aspect of the film meets his own standards. Audiences wont have long to wait to find out whether the film matches the expectations set for it, as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is less than two months away from its release date.
