Chiwetel Ejiofor confirms his Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness character Karl Mordo survived Thanos’ snap from Avengers: Infinity War. Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange has become a major component in the MCU ever since his debut in his own film Doctor Strange. Since then, he has appeared in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame as well as Spider-Man: No Way Home as a supporting character. These appearances have resulted in Strange gaining some incredible character development and becoming a fan favorite hero. The upcoming Doctor Strange sequel will be the first time the character has been the focal point of a film since 2016.

Strange is not the only character returning for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Ejiofor’s Karl Mordo will be returning to the big screen for the first time since the 2016 film. In the original movie, Mordo acted as a mentor to Strange in the way of the mystic arts but would ultimately leave the group sorcerers as he felt Strange was abusing his powers. After this it appears his goal is to rid the world of magic users claiming that the biggest problem with the world is that “there are too many sorcerers.” Since that moment, it appears Mordo has managed to align himself with a new group of allies called the Illuminati which will debut in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

In an interview with Total Film, Ejiofor revealed that Mordo survived the snap from Avengers: Infinity War that removed half of the universe's population for five years. When asked about the situation, Ejiofor stated that his character was not “part of the snap's 'away' group," further explaining that Mordo "was definitely engaged in that time." While it is not fully certain what Mordo has accomplished since the events of Doctor Strange, it is clear that he has made waves in Strange's absence. Feel free to read the quote in its entirety below.

“The concerns in the MCU have all expanded, but in some ways [Mordo’s] concerns have gathered momentum. The nature of what he has been talking about has come to pass, in many ways. I think it’s a totally justified quest, and we’ll continue to see this dichotomy between somebody who is still holding a fraternal connection to Stephen Strange, and somebody who does think about the bigger picture.”

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Mordo

Until the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness later this week, viewers can only speculate as to what Mordo has done in the MCU over the last decade. It’s clear that at some point his quest to rid the world of sorcerers has had him cross paths with the Illuminati but it is not yet clear why they have joined forces. Based on the trailers thus far for Multiverse of Madness, the two characters that seem most likely to be a part of that group are What If...'s Captain Carter and Charles Xavier from the X-Men franchise. Carter and Xavier are both heroes in their films so it appears that they are either variants that don’t have the same morals as the characters we know or that something happened during the time of the snap to align them with Mordo.

Mordo’s affiliation with the Illuminati in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is also not completely confirmed at this point. While audiences have assumed he is a part of the group due to the trailers, it is possible that they are just working together to reach a common goal. Perhaps the arrival of a new evil Doctor Strange has temporarily aligned Mordo with the group. It appears at this time that the evil variant of Doctor Strange will be the main antagonist of the new film and perhaps the Illuminati sought aid from the man who has known Strange best.
