Chiwetel Ejiofor is reportedly set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the villain Mordo in the sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of MadnessDoctor Strange is a 2016 superhero movie starring British actor Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular character. On his quest to find a cure for extensive nerve damage to his hands due to an accident, Strange finds the Ancient One, who teaches him magic and sorcery. He eventually embraces his role as a hero and uses his new abilities to protect the world.

In the comics, Baron Mordo is known as one of Doctor Strange's main antagonists. He studied magic alongside Strange, but was cast out after plotting to kill the Ancient One. Mordo is a very talented magician, known for his ability to astral project and his knowledge of the dark arts. The character has appeared in different media outside of the comics, including cartoons and video games.

According to The Illuminerdi, Chiwetel Ejiofor is returning as Mordo in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. In the first movie, Mordo was an ally of Doctor Strange, helping him learn and understand the world of magic. Mordo fought alongside Strange to help defeat Kaecilius and stop Dormammu from engulfing the Earth in the Dark Dimension. Mordo became disillusioned when he found out that the Ancient One and later Strange bent the rules of magic and renounces his title as a sorcerer. It is then revealed in a post-credits scene that he believes the world has "too many sorcerers," alluding to his turn as a villain. Ejiofor has shown his appreciation for playing Mordo and adding depth to an otherwise one-dimensional character.

Doctor Strange - Chiwetel Ejilofor's Baron Mordo's Backstory Explained

Along with the return of Ejiofor as Mordo, there are several characters within the MCU set to appear in the Doctor Strange sequel. Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch will appear, and the movie will tie into her new Disney+ show, WandaVision. New characters that will reportedly be introduced in Multiverse of Madness include teen superhero America Chavez aka Miss America, Brother Voodoo, and the sorceress Clea. Based on these new characters and tie-ins to other properties within the MCU, many fans believe Doctor Strange 2 will have a major impact on Phase 4.

While these casting rumors have been exciting, there has been behind-the-scenes drama that has fans of the Sorcerer Supreme worried. Scott Derrickson, director on the first Doctor Strange movie, was set to return to direct the sequel. However, Derrickson left citing creative differences with Marvel, though he is staying on as an executive producer. Fans worried that Derrickson wanted to create a darker, more horror-based movie for the Doctor Strange sequel, and the studio pushed back on the idea for a more traditional superhero movie. This isn't the first time an MCU director has left a movie due to creative differences, as Edgar Wright infamously did with Ant-Man. Hopefully, with the return of familiar characters like Mordo, fans will continue to have high hopes for Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.
