WARNING: Major spoilers for Doctor Strange 2!

A new behind-the-scenes video from the set of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness shows Kamar-Taj’s sorcerers practicing their drum call. After his car accident and subsequent nerve damage, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Dr. Stephen Strange first visited Kamar-Taj in a last-ditch effort to heal himself in Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange (2016). The training grounds then became his home as he became a Master of the Mystic Arts before moving to the New York Sanctum and aiding the Avengers against Thanos. Both Kamar-Taj and Strange returned to the big screen in Sam Raimi’s Multiverse of Madness, albeit under dire circumstances. In addition to Cumberbatch, the film stars Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Elizabeth Olsen, and Xochitl Gomez debuting as America Chavez.

With a script by Loki creator Michael Waldron, the sequel follows WandaVision, Loki, What If…?, and Spider-Man: No Way Home—all of which allude to the MCU's ever-evolving multiverse concept. At the beginning of the film, America and a Stephen Strange variant, Defender Strange, are chased by a demon in the space between universes. It’s swiftly revealed that the demon was dispatched by Wanda, who aims to steal America’s universe-jumping powers so that she can be with her children, Billy (Julian Hilliard) and Tommy (Jett Klyne), in another reality. Therefore, Earth-616 Strange hides America at Kamar-Taj, which is defended by an army of sorcerers. Unfortunately, the Scarlet Witch has no intention of being reasonable, and the drums sound as she arrives.

Following Multiverse of Madness’ opening sequence and battle with Shuma-Gorath, the Scarlet Witch’s assault on Kamar-Taj further established the film’s pace, tone, and villain—who may be one of the most formidable foes MCU fans have ever seen. Olsen’s character quickly and brutally disposes of Kamar-Taj’s inhabitants before Strange temporarily traps her in a mirror prison, which she soon escapes from. Of course, the fall of Kamar-Taj may pale in comparison to the brutality on display during Scarlet Witch’s slaughter of Earth-838’s Illuminati.

Thankfully, Kamar-Taj appears to be thriving once again at the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, with America training to be a sorcerer. Still, Wanda’s transformation into the Scarlet Witch and slaughtering of innocents has proven to be one of the more controversial aspects of the film. Regardless, the blockbuster is a certified hit, blowing past The Batman to become the highest-grossing film of 2022 thanks to sequences like the one that began with the sound of drums.
