Fan art brings to life the Evil Dead and Doctor Strange 2 crossover imagined in Bruce Campbell’s April Fools’ Day joke. The Evil Dead and its sequel Evil Dead 2 may belong definitively to the ‘80s, but the popularity of those horror classics lives on well into the 21st Century. Indeed, after 2013's reboot another Evil Dead movie is on the way under the title Evil Dead Rise.

Of course a big part of the enduring appeal of Evil Dead is the popularity of Campbell, the man who starred in the original two movies as well as the spinoff movie Army of Darkness and later series Ash vs Evil Dead. Campbell indeed knows how much fans still love him and the Evil Dead franchise, which is why he knew they’d get a kick out of his recent April Fools’ Day joke, which saw him “leaking” a script page from the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness that saw Ash making an appearance. In the fake scene, Strange happens upon a cabin where he meets a chainsaw-wielding “disheveled man” who is of course Campbell’s Ash. Strange tells Ash he’s looking for the Darkhold, an ancient book of magic, and Ash asks him if it has a face on it (in a nod to the famous Book of the Dead from the Evil Dead movies).

Sadly the scene related in Campbell’s gag was just that, a gag, but that didn’t stop one fan artist from imagining what that scene could look like for real. Shared on Reddit by user grandtaskmaster, the trading card style art sees a blood spattered and befuddled looking Ash greeting Doctor Strange at the door of his cabin. There is of course another level to this particular joke, as Doctor Strange 2 is being directed by Sam Raimi, the same man who created the original Evil Dead movies. Raimi indeed has given Campbell cameos in his non-Evil Dead movies before, fitting him into all three of his Spider-Man films. Given the connection between director and actor, it would not be a surprise to see Campbell appear in Doctor Strange 2 in some capacity. It would however be a shock to see Campbell actually playing Ash in Doctor Strange 2.

Hopes that this completely unlikely crossover could happen obviously hinge upon the multiverse aspect of Doctor Strange 2, and the assumption that the movie will be filled with all sorts of characters from different universes within the larger Marvel multiverse. And indeed, technically speaking, Ash belongs in that world too as there was once a Marvel Zombies vs. The Army of Darkness comic book that took place on Earth-2149 and saw Ash encountering characters like Daredevil, Thunderball and Scarlet Witch. That being said, it still seems like a very long shot that Doctor Strange and Ash will meet up in Doctor Strange 2. But it’s also no surprise to see Campbell stoking hopes for such a crossover, as he’s long been committed to keeping the Evil Dead flag flying for fans.
