Xochitl Gomez, who is set to bring America Chavez to life in the MCU, reveals the important advice that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness co-star Elizabeth Olsen gave her. Since the end of the Infinity Saga, Marvel Studios has been using Phase 4 to explore new territories within the ever-expanding MCU. While long-time Avengers have finished their adventures, it has allowed some of the supporting characters to step into the spotlight and be further fleshed out as part of the MCU's next era. The addition of Disney+ has also let Marvel Studios bring original series to the small screen with new heroes and villains from the comics.

One of the concepts that Phase 4 has focused heavily on is the Multiverse, allowing the franchises to visit alternative realities and follow variants of familiar Marvel players. Following the game-changing Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to delve even further into this concept. Along with their Multiverse arc, the Doctor Strange sequel is also bringing a new superhero into the MCU in the form of America Chavez. Played by Gomez, America made her debut in Marvel Comics back in September 2011, and after 10 years of existence, the heroine is about to jump off the pages and into the world of live-action.

As America will make her cinematic debut in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which opens in theaters this week, Screen Rant recently chatted with Gomez herself about joining the MCU. During Screen Rant's exclusive interview with The Baby-Sitters Club alum, Gomez was asked about who on the cast gave her the best advice in terms of joining a large franchise like the MCU. Gomez revealed that Scarlet Witch herself, Elizabeth Olsen, was a mentor figure for the 16-year-old actor, sharing the following:

Gomez: Elizabeth Olsen, she gave me fantastic advice. She said to never hesitate to give Marvel an idea, or to just pitch in about your character. And that Marvel really means that when they want your advice, or any notes or anything ... I was like, "Okay..." And I did it! I took the advice, and it was really rewarding to actually see some of the notes I've given actually happen. Then we would do it in a scene, and it's like, "Wow," especially at my age. It was just, "Wow."

Screen Rant: Is there something you added about her character that you could share?

Gomez: I think that might involve spoilers.

America Chavez in Doctor Strange 2

Pitching character backstories or ideas is a common practice among Marvel Studios actors, as they are regularly able to have creative input in the roles they portray on screen. Robert Downey Jr., for example, is well known for his improvised scenes when playing Iron Man, which have often made it into the final cut of MCU movies. Hearing that Gomez's own ideas have made it into Chavez's character is exciting, as her MCU arrival is a big deal for a number of reasons. Firstly, it's adding yet another member of the Young Avengers, following the MCU arrivals of heroes like Kate Bishop, Kid Loki, and Tommy and Billy (a.k.a. Speed and Wiccan). America's live-action appearance will also add one of comics' most popular Latinx superheroes, something that is lacking in comic book film and TV adaptations. In addition to that, America is a member of the LGBTQ+ community, adding more representation to the MCU.

Like most Marvel projects, America's role in Multiverse of Madness has been shrouded in secrecy throughout production. While this will serve as her MCU introduction, only time will tell where America will show up next in the franchise. Even though the studio appears to be eying a formation of the Young Avengers, it will likely be a few years until that comes to fruition. In the mean time, Marvel has clearly involved Gomez in the building of its brand new MCU hero, and America Chavez's debut in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will likely be even more nuanced and exciting as a result.
