Benedict Cumberbatch films a stunt in which his sorcerer takes flight in new Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of the Madness behind-the-scenes images. The two-time Oscar nominee returns to lead his first solo Marvel Cinematic Universe movie after a six-year development cycle, which endured a bumpy road when original director and co-writer Scott Derrickson departed with partner C. Robert Cargill departed due to creative differences. Jade Halley Bartlett was originally brought on to pen a new script in late October, though would later be replaced when both Sam Raimi and Loki creator Michael Waldron were brought on board, with the two electing to start from scratch to find a shared vision for the sequel.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness acts as a continuation of the cosmic narrative put forth by WandaVisionLoki season 1 and Spider-Man: No Way Home. In the film, Strange is struggling to come to terms with the various reality-shattering events leading up to the movie, only to find himself confronted with the arrival of a mysterious new adversary and a friend-turned-enemy threatening to destroy his world and multiple others. Strange must put together a team of old and new allies, including Xochitl Gomez's America Chavez, to put a stop to the villains before it's too late.

With less than three months remaining until the film hits theaters, new Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness BTS images have emerged in the latest print issue of Empire (via Binge Watch This). The photos see Cumberbatch filming a sky-bound stunt as well as Raimi directing a sequence and new looks at America Chavez and Wong. Check out the exciting BTS images below:

Cumberbatch's flying stunt may seem a little ambiguous in its Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness BTS image, but there is a key detail that may point towards the nature of the scene. At the bottom of the image is a floor design reminiscent of that seen in the America Chavez still seen above as well as trailers for the film in which Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch is meditating seemingly in an area at Kamar Taj. With rumors swirling that Scarlet Witch will take on a villainous role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in connection to her story from WandaVision, it seems possible Cumberbatch's flying stunt is a sequence in which the two characters face off.

The new Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness BTS images also offer the exciting first look at Mark Anthony Brighton and Topo Wresniwiro's returns as Masters of the Mystic Arts Daniel Drumm and Hamir. Though both were seen in the prior film, Drumm was last seen having seemingly been killed by Mads Mikkelsen's Kaecilius in his assault on the New York Sanctum, raising the question as to whether this is an alternate reality version of the sorcerer or if he was somehow revived. Only time will tell when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters on May 6.
