Benedict Cumberbatch claims that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will reach the same level of success that Spider-Man: No Way Home did. Multiverse of Madness is the long-awaited sequel to 2016's Doctor Strange. The film will explore the fallout of No Way Home's finale, which saw Strange (Cumberbatch) cast a forbidden spell that opens the Multiverse. The film is helmed by Sam Raimi, who is no stranger to the world of Marvel, having previously directed the Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire.

No Way Home is certainly a big act to follow as it has shattered numerous box office records since its release and been met with acclaim from both critics and fans. The success and popularity of No Way Home puts a lot of pressure on Doctor Strange. Spider-Man's latest outing was audiences' introduction to the multiverse, folding characters from Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy into the MCU. Given how well the film handled the multiverse, Doctor Strange has a lot to live up to and expand on.

In a recent interview with EmpireCumberbatch claimed that the new film will be as big as No Way Home. According to Cumberbatch, Multiverse of Madness is a "big, big movie" and will be "an absolute riot." Cumberbatch has stated that the film brings a lot of ambition with it, and he feels confident that if it manages to pull it off, it will be "a success on the level of Spidey." See his full quote below:

“It’s a big, big movie. It’s going to be an absolute riot. And if it brings off the level of ambition it’s got, we’re going to have a success on the level of Spidey. There you go, I’ll put my flag in the sand.”

The Broken Multiverse Becomes Real In Doctor Strange 2 Theater Poster

This is a big statement to make given that No Way Home is one of the most successful films ever made (and managed to achieve this during a global pandemic). However, Multiverse of Madness will act almost as a continuation of No Way Home, and fans are certainly hungry for more of what the Multiverse has to offer. Combine that with the confirmed appearance of Patrick Stewart reprising his role as Charles Xavier of the X-Men, and it's not hard to imagine fans flocking to see Doctor Strange when it opens.

With still over a month before its release, there's no telling what other information will be leaked about the film, only adding to the hype. Having been a part of Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: End Game, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, Cumberbatch certainly knows what it's like to be a part of a box-office smash hit. While it is hard to imagine anything topping No Way Home anytime soon, Cumberbatch knows what he's talking about, so fans will just have to see if he's right when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness premieres May 6th.
