Benedict Cumberbatch couldn't show his face in a new interview because he's on set filming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Directed by Sam Raimi, the film has been in production for several months now as confirmed by some of its stars, including Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (Mordo). Of course, it will see the return of its titular character played by Cumberbatch — his first appearance in the franchise since Avengers: Endgame.

After hints in WandaVision, the multiverse will fully be explored in the upcoming sequel. The concept is not new to the MCU as it had been hinted at before in films like Doctor Strange and Ant-Man. More recently, Spider-Man: Far From Home used it as a red herring as part of Mysterio's elaborate plan to trick Peter Parker into giving up Iron Man's EDITH. After that, however, Marvel Studios is set to properly tackle the idea. While the multiverse may be touched upon in a few other projects, everything is expected culminate in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

In a new clip shared by fan-account @SmilingBenedict, Cumberbatch gets on a video interview but instead of showing up on the screen, the camera is simply pointed towards a wall. The actor explains that the reason why he can't show his face is because he's in the middle of filming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is still under embargo. It's a hilarious moment, but it's also curious why he just didn't do an audio call? Check out the video below:

Chances are the interview occurred during some downtime on set and Cumberbatch wasn't able to remove his make-up and/or even his costume. Considering how elaborate the future MCU Sorcerer Supreme's look is on the screen, it would be time-consuming to change into his normal clothes and suit back up as the hero once the cameras restart rolling for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. In any case, the actor's honesty in the video coupled with the blank wall shown throughout the clips makes for some laughs. It also makes fans more curious about why he went to such great lengths to keep his appearance hidden.

While Doctor Strange has only been in a handful of MCU films compared to other characters in the franchise, what he looks like is well known. Given this, it's curious why Cumberbatch wouldn't want to show his face on camera while filming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. There are a couple of possible reasons. Firstly, Doctor Strange could be getting a brand new costume, which is somewhat expected considering that Marvel Studios tend to update them every film. However, the changes must be striking for the actor to be this secretive about it. Secondly, perhaps he has on prosthetics due to shooting a fight sequence and he didn't want to give away anything that could spoil the movie. Whatever the case may be, this only amplifies anticipation of the movie.
