Warning: SPOILERS for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness!

America Chavez's Marvel Cinematic Universe future after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has been teased by the movie's writer. The Phase 4 MCU movie features the debut of Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez, a powerful teenager with the ability to travel the multiverse. Doctor Strange 2 gives her a prominent role in the story, as Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) wants to steal her powers, leaving Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to protect her. While the film features multiple versions of the other two magically-gifted characters, America Chavez is unique in the fact that there is only one of her to exist across the entire multiverse.

Unsurprisingly, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' ending teases that this is just the beginning of America Chavez's MCU story. After not being able to control her multiverse powers for most of the film, she comes to gain a better understanding of them during the third act. Once she, Doctor Strange, and Wong (Benedict Wong) help stop Scarlet Witch, the trio leave Mount Wundagore behind. Doctor Strange 2 last shows America Chavez as a new student at Kamar-Taj, where she's attempting to open a regular portal with magic instead of the multiverse star-shaped portals she can create through punches or kicks.

Now that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is out in theaters, Screen Rant had the opportunity to interview the film's writer Michael Waldron. After also working on Loki season 1, Waldron has become a key figure in the MCU's multiverse plans. One of the questions we asked him, though, was about America Chavez's MCU future and what the reveal that she's the only version of herself in the multiverse could mean. Waldron couldn't provide any direct confirmation about where America Chavez's story is going after Doctor Strange 2, but he is just as curious as many viewers are to learn more about her.

That's a good question. And I think that's the sort of thing that I'd like to see explored in the next chapter of America's story. Clearly, she's a very significant being in the universe. Whether you want to call her a Nexus Being or whatever. I think that's all stuff that's up for grabs as we continue to explore her story.

America Chavez trapped in Doctor Strange 2.

Marvel Studios has yet to announce when or if Gomez's America Chavez will return to the MCU. However, Doctor Strange 2's ending clearly establishes that she is here to stay. She tells Doctor Strange that she's happy she wound up in his universe and the tease of her learning more magic points to her power levels continuing to grow. Prior to the various changes to the Phase 4 slate caused by COVID-19, America Chavez was meant to return after Doctor Strange 2 in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Concept art teased her important role in the film alongside Doctor Strange, so their futures could remain linked moving forward.

Even though America Chavez's MCU future is still a mystery, the response to her in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has been mostly positive. She very well could be part of the MCU's eventual Young Avengers movie or Disney+ show. If that is the case, then America Chavez could return next in other projects involving her future teammates, such as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. For all we know, Marvel Studios could be developing an America Chavez spinoff too. Regardless of what Marvel's secret plans for America Chavez's MCU future are, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is certainly not the last time audiences will see her.
