Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness director Sam Raimi reveals more details about Xochitl Gomez’s America Chavez. Raimi is best known for his work on horror films, including The Evil Dead, Army of Darkness, and, of course, helming Sony’s Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire. Following Doctor Strange (2016) director Scott Derrickson’s exit from the project, Marvel Studios’ Multiverse of Madness sees Raimi make his grand return to the comic book genre.

Described as the first horror film to take place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Doctor Strange sequel will follow its titular sorcerer as he ventures into the multiverse. Following WandaVision, Loki, What If…?, and Spider-Man: No Way HomeMultiverse of Madness is poised to fully embrace Phase Four’s multiverse concept as its heroes encounter alternate, variant versions of themselves and other well-known characters. The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Elizabeth Olsen, who all reprise their MCU roles. Joining them is Gomez making her MCU debut as the America Chavez, who was originally supposed to cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

With only a month to go before Multiverse of Madness releases in theaters, promotion is ramping up and the creatives behind it are doling out teases about the film. In a recent interview with Fandango, Raimi was asked to describe America Chavez and Doctor Strange’s relationship in the film. Specifically, Raimi spoke on what Chavez adds to the story. Read his full response below:

“Well, she adds an exciting spirit of youth. She's a newcomer to her powers and to our world. She actually comes from another universe. I think she brings a sense of lightness and youth. Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange can be a very egotistical and stuffy character, a know-it-all. She just flies in the face of that. She doesn't really have respect for him originally. She sees right through the fronts that he puts up. She's much more down-to-earth and one of us, and she doesn't take his attitude. I don't think he likes that at first. So, she creates a contrast.”

Chavez will create more than a contrast in Multiverse of Madness. In the comics, the character originates from a pocket dimension known as the Utopian Parallel and has the ability to open portals to other universes. It seems likely that Chavez will be forced to flee her reality and team up with Strange and Wong to combat some sort of multiversal threat. Chavez’s star portals can briefly be seen in the film’s trailer, which also teases an evil Strange/Strange Supreme, Defender Strange, Wanda variant(s), and Patrick Stewart’s Professor Charles Xavier—who appears to be a member of the Illuminati.

Suffice to say, Strange’s universe jumping in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be facilitated by Chavez. That said, the pair could encounter everything from zombies, mutants, and Spider-Men to the Superior Iron Man. Beyond Multiverse of Madness, Marvel Studios has yet to reveal what’s next for Chavez. Considering the character’s ties to the multiverse and the MCU’s multiversal narrative, chances are she’ll be appearing in more projects after the sequel.
