America Chavez's creator has some thoughts about her appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and about Marvel's treatment of creators. The highly anticipated entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to be a massive team-up film with MCU characters like Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch meeting heroes from other universes like Professor X, played by Patrick Stewart, from Fox's X-Men movies. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to be a massive event-level spectacle set to introduce a lot of exciting possibilities to the franchise moving forward.

The newest hero joining the MCU in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is America Chavez, played by Xochitl Gomez. Created by Joe Casey and Nick Dragotta in 2011, Chavez has the power to create star-shaped portals that allow her to jump between parallel universes, making her a vital part of the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel, which is set to explore the various multiverses. Chavez has been a character Marvel has pushed to the forefront in recent years with appearances in the Marvel Rising animated series.

America Chavez creator Joe Casey recently spoke with Comicbook and talked about his feelings about America Chavez making the leap to the big screen. The creator says he is excited but also calls out Marvel's method of compensating the creators of their characters, imaging how much money Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is going to make. However, despite his hesitation in creating a new character for Marvel that he may not see profits on, he is happy to see her in various forms of media. Casey said:

"It's very cool, but on the other hand, this is just the latest in a fairly long string of America Chavez appearances in other media -- everything from video games to action figures to animation to apparel to bed sheets and probably beyond, areas in which she's already made an impression outside of the comics...when I consider how much cash this Doctor Strange sequel is going to rake in. In all seriousness, it was probably not the wisest move on my part to create any new characters for Marvel Publishing -- considering their spotty track record on dealing fairly with creators -- however, in the case of America Chavez, I did it, and regardless of where things are at on that front, I'm definitely psyched to see her in a movie that costs more than the GNP of certain developing nations."

Casey is not the only creator to speak out about Marvel's practices of compensating their creative talent. In 2021 Ed Brubaker made headlines saying he made more money off his cameo in Captain America: The Winter Soldier than actually creating the concept of the Winter Soldier, a character Marvel has earned a lot of money in various movies, television series, and merchandise. Rocket Raccoon creator Bill Mantlo has been in institutional care since he was the victim of a hit and run accident in 1992 and is helped not by revenue from Guardians of the Galaxy merchandise but contributions from fans.

While the MCU was built on established Marvel characters with years of history like Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, the franchise has now started to integrate newer characters who even were created after the MCU started in 2008 like America Chavez, Jane Foster as The Mighty Thor, and Ms. Marvel to name a few. Yet it appears even with Marvel Studios continuing to grow its universe, with massive films like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder hitting the big screen, Disney will continue to see profits rise but potentially not share with the people that birthed the ideas.
