Wizards of the Coast has announced that the first-ever Dungeons & Dragons musical will take place at D&D Celebration 2021. There are already several unofficial D&D musicals and songs that can be found online, but these are all fan creations and aren't endorsed by the owners of the game.

D&D Celebration is an annual event that features livestreamed Dungeons & Dragons games and announcements about upcoming D&D books. D&D Celebration 2021 will feature the first-ever Dungeon Master Challenge, wherein DMs from around the world will compete to prove who one is the best, with individual challenge being revealed each day to keep them on their toes. This year's event will also feature the cast of Star Trek: Discovery playing a game of D&D, and the final day of D&D Celebration 2021 will crown the winner of the Dungeon Master Challenge and reveal new details the future of the game.

On the second day of D&D Celebration 2021, the first-ever official D&D musical will be performed live. The musical, titled The Circus of Sound, will take place on September 25 at 4 PM PDT/7 PM EDT. It's probable that its plot will involve the upcoming The Wild Beyond the Witchlight D&D campaign, which prominently features a carnival in its framing device. The Circus of Sound is set to run for two hours and will close out the day's events.

The DM of The Circus of Sound event is Kelly D'Angelo (Miracle Workers), and the players consist of musicians who have appeared in movies, TV shows, video games, and theater. The group includes Anthony Rapp (Rent, Star Trek: Discovery), Jason Charles Miller (Godhead, Critical Role), Azie Dungey (Girls5eva, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Vico Ortiz (American Horror Story), and Mariah Rose Faith (Nightmare Time). It's unclear if they will all be playing as D&D's popular Bard class, but if there was ever a time to run an all-Bard party in D&D, the first legitimate D&D musical seems like it should be it.

As previously mentioned, D&D Celebration 2021 will feature extended looks at upcoming Dungeons & Dragons books set to launch before the end of 2021. These include The Wild Beyond the Witchlight, a campaign that takes players on a journey to the Feywild, where the faeries of the D&D multiverse call home; Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos, which stats out the magical university from Magic: The Gathering and lets players take on the role of college student adventurers; and Fizban's Treasury of Dragons, which will introduce new information about the draconic races in the multiverse and stat out some of the most powerful dragons in the game.
