The first look at DMZ has been revealed, teasing Ava DuVernay’s upcoming TV series adaptation. The series is based on the DC Comics saga of the same name, which is set in a near-future when America is caught in a bitter civil war. Manhattan, in particular, has turned into a demilitarized zone, destroyed and isolated from the rest of the world. Written by Brian Wood, with artwork from Riccardo Burchielli, DMZ imagines a world in which Manhattan is caught between two warring factions: The United States of America and the secessionist Free States of America.

First announced in October of last year as being in development for HBO Max, the DMZ adaptation will focus on Alma Ortega (Rosario Dawson), a fierce medic who goes on a harrowing journey to find the son she lost at the beginning of the conflict. The series will also introduce Parco Delgado (Benjamin Bratt), the popular and deadly leader of one of the most powerful gangs in the DMZ. Now that the adaptation has been given a series order, DuVernay has shared photos of the DMZ cast on Twitter. You can check out the photos below, along with a comparison of the comics version from DC.

Planned as a limited series consisting of four episodes, DMZ also stars Warrior alum Hoon Lee and When They See Us star Freddy Miyares, and Jordan Preston Carter of The Haves and the Have Nots. Robert Patino, an executive producer of the series, will write all the episodes. DuVernay, also an executive producer, directed the pilot.

Published under DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint, DMZ spanned 72 issues from November 2005 until February 2012. Garnering critical acclaim from both comic book fans and critics, DMZ will likely make a big impact when it arrives on HBO Max.
