While 2011 had a few great films, 2012 looks to be packed to the brim with highly-anticipated and incredibly promising genre flicks, from The Avengers to Prometheus to The Dark Knight Rises to The Amazing Spider-Man to Skyfall to The Hobbit. And then, of course, there’s Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained.
Today, The Weinstein Company unveiled the official poster for Django Unchained, Tarantino’s first full-on homage to the westerns of yore – and specifically spaghetti westerns as made famous by Sergio Leone (The Good, The Bad and The Ugly).
The man hatless man appears to be Jamie Foxx’s character, Django – an ex-slave turned bounty hunter on the hunt for his wife, Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), who has been forced into prostitution by Leonardo Dicaprio’s villainous plantation-owner, Calvin Candie. The man with the hat appears to be Christoph Waltz (Inglorious Basterds), who plays the German bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz, otherwise known as the man who trains Django to become a badass gunfighter.

Ultimately, the poster tells us what we already full well knew – Django Unchained is going to be Quentin Tarantino’s take on spaghetti westerns. The poster itself is even retro-styled like that of an actual western poster from the 1960s or 70s. Simple. Intriguing. Aesthetically excellent. One can probably expect a lot of extreme zooms and close-ups throughout the film, with music a score reminiscent of Ennio Morricone’s best.
Only Tarantino could bring together such an eclectic but awesome cast of actors. Besides the aforementioned Foxx, Waltz, Washington, and Dicaprio, Django will feature Kurt Russell as Ace, the ruthless fiend who oversees Candie’s plantation; Sam Jackson as Candie’s house-slave and right hand man, Stephen, a master manipulator; and Sacha Baron Cohen as Scotty, the man who purchases Broomhilda as a “female companion.”
What do you guys think of the poster, Screen Ranters? Let us know in the comments.
Django Unchained hits theaters December 25th, 2012.
