Gym, tan and...bleach? For over a decade, Jersey Shore star Paul "DJ Pauly D" DelVecchio has been known for his signature, heavily-gelled blowout hairstyle, which has gone unchanged since the MTV series aired in 2009. But recently, the dark-haired guido unveiled on social media a new look to close out 2020 - platinum locks! While many fans and co-stars are here for blonde Pauly, others are wondering what he was thinking.
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Pauly, 40, has undergone a number of drastic life changes. For starters, he finally left the bachelor life behind for girlfriend Nikki Hall, who he reconnected with on Double Shot At Love season two. Though the show ended with Pauly and Nikki deciding to take things slow, the pair later confirmed they were quarantining together at his Las Vegas home. This announcement didn't come as a surprise to fans, who recognized Pauly's kitchen countertops in Nikki's Instagram cooking tutorials. Additionally, after live shows were canceled, the out-of-work DJ took to the gym (even more so than usual). Now, he has biceps that can easily compete with Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino. And let's not forget about Pauly's quarantine beard!
The Jersey Shore fandom believed that facial hair on the always clean-shaven Pauly was the end of his 2020 transformations. However, Pauly recently took to Instagram to show off his fresh-to-death blonde look. In the caption, he said he wanted to see if his limited edition got2b styling spiking glue and blasting freeze spray works on light hair. His answer was, "Hint! It DOES!!!."
Many showed appreciation for the makeover, including co-star and best friend Vinny Guadagnino, who Pauly celebrated a "bromittment" ceremony with on Jersey Shore: Family Vacation. Vinny commented, "I used to be a brunette guy but now I love blondes." Kenny Braasch and Ed Waisbrot from The Bachelorette even got in on the action. Kenny tagged Ed in the post, saying, "looks like we are goin blonde." As for girlfriend Nikki, she wrote, "Zaaaammm Zaddy!!" with a tongue emoji.
Still, a lot of fans weren't thrilled about the change. Some expressed criticism, pleading with Pauly to go back to his "iconic look." Others cracked jokes, making references to Slim Shady and Game of Thrones character Daenerys Targaryen.
Despite the negative feedback, it's likely Pauly will ignore the haters and do what makes him happy. Often dubbed "Pauly D Positivity," he's never one to get involved in conflict or show sadness and anger. On every season of Jersey Shore, Pauly is the life of the house, whether he's waking up his roomies ("Oh yeah, wake up yeah") with his bedazzled megaphone, or exclaiming how he "loves birthdays this time of year."
If the belief that "blondes have more fun" is true, Pauly will serve as an even brighter light among the drama-filled cast. Plus, the platinum look will surely inspire a slew of new catchphrases. Yeah, buddy!
