Final Fantasy XIV's new Island Sanctuary requires players to collect various resources for building, and some of these materials can only be found by diving underwater. Some Warriors of Light will undoubtedly be confused as to how this process is done, as the tutorial portion of the Island does not provide directions on diving or swimming underwater in Final Fantasy XIV. Fortunately, the technique used to submerge oneself beneath the surface of the ocean is incredibly easy to do.
It should be noted that diving and underwater exploration are not new to Final Fantasy XIV. This traversal mechanic was initially introduced in Stormblood. This expansion has Warriors of Light depart from the frigid wastelands and sci-fi civilizations of Heavensward to the more temperate regions of Ala Mhigo and Doma. During the players' journey, they are tasked with making an alliance with the Kojin, a race of Kappa-like creatures that live atop the ocean floor. Naturally, players who completed the expansion had to dive into the sea. The controls and inputs used to perform this action are the same for the Island Sanctuary in Final Fantasy XIV.
For those who've yet to unlock their Island Sanctuary, they must first complete the quest "Endwalker," which is the final MSQ of the Endwalker expansion. Once this feat has been fulfilled, they must finish "Seeking Sanctuary" in Old Sharlayan. This side quest will eventually lead them to their island. Fortunately, no extra steps are required, and no subscription is needed.
Diving In The Island Sanctuary In FFXIV
Thanks to a demonstration by YouTube content creator Cole Evyx, fans can learn how to dive underwater in their Island Sanctuary in Final Fantasy XIV. After going beneath the surface of the sea, players can collect a host of new materials for improving their island hideaway. For further clarification, here are the default controls below for diving in the water surrounding Final Fantasy XIV's Island Sanctuary:
Platform or Input Method |
How To Dive In Island Sanctuary |
PC |
|
PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 |
|
Xbox Controllers on PC |
|
Each of the inputs above should allow players to dive underwater. If adventurers are looking to explore other areas in Hydaelyn outside their Island Sanctuary, the same controls will allow them to submerge themselves as well. As mentioned above, completion of Endwalker is needed for unlocking the Island Sanctuary, meaning that players who've finished the expansion will also have done Stormblood, where diving was introduced. However, it is possible that those who used story skips to reach Endwalker's quests might not have learned how underwater traversal works in Final Fantasy XIV.
