Disney World’s Epcot May Get a Guardians of the Galaxy Roller Coaster

Disney Epcot may get Guardians of the Galaxy roller coaster

Disney might be adding a second space adventure segment to its thrill ride empire if the latest rumors are true. The House of Mouse has already announced plans to turn the Tower of Terror attraction at Disneyland Resort’s California Adventure into a Guardians of the Galaxy-themed ride called Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission - BREAKOUT! instead.

The Tower of Terror ride in Disney World Florida, however, will not be undergoing such a change and will remain as is. That said, Disney is reported to be considering the Orlando, Florida location as an avenue for an additional Guardians of the Galaxy theme park ride.

As detailed by SlashFilm, the rumor mill has been buzzing about the Guardians possibly overtaking a certain space at Disney World’s EPCOT ride -- namely, the current Ellen’s Energy Adventure in the park’s Future World Universe of Energy portion, which launched 20 years ago -- with a Guardians-themed roller coaster that would include “both elaborate scenes and a long roller coaster portion.” The site draws parallels to a ride at Universal Studios’ Wizarding World section called Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts.

EPCOT’s Future World, including the Energy sector, is currently focused on a so-called “edutainment” theme, and Ellen’s Energy Adventure fits in with that modality. Namely, it’s meant to provide its guests with “a light-hearted look at various energy resources, how energy is produced, the history of energy production, and the search for new energy resources." It has also never housed any roller coasters and is one of the lesser-visited legs of the park’s spread of sites.

There are reportedly some surprising legal hurdles that the company would have to overcome to make this happen, however. Although Disney and Marvel are cinematic partners, Universal Studios Orlando holds the rights to at least some of the comic house’s properties everywhere east of the Mississippi River. That includes many of Marvel’s characters at its Islands of Adventure sector, including The Hulk, Spider-Man, the X-Men, and Captain America. As such, there’s a possibility that the messy shared custody issues between the competitors could be prohibitive to the rumored plans.

According to WDW News Today, though, those hypothetical hang-ups don't appear to be standing in the way of Disney. A confirmation of the brand's plans to outfit its Floridian EPCOT site with a Guardians of the Galaxy ride may come as soon as the end of the year.
