But speaking of these villains, some of them were truly awful individuals with horrid motivations. While all Disney villains have made bad choices, some were victims of bad luck, meaning they would've chosen a better life if the cards weren't stacked against them. So without further delay, here are 5 times we felt bad for Disney villains and 5 times we hated them!

HATED THEM: Lady Tremaine

Lady Tremaine with large eyes, pointing her finger in Cinderella by Disney

Lady Tremaine is the villain from Cinderella, and she is beyond cruel for no real reason.

She treats Cinderella like a slave, locking her in the house and forcing her to clean, cook, and care for her and her daughters. She also seems intent on humiliating Cinderella for fun. This villain is so evil, she even has a cat named Lucifer!

FELT BAD FOR THEM: Ursula

Ursula from The Little Mermaid

In The Little MermaidUrsula was a magical seawitch who was forced to live in deplorable conditions. Instead of being valued for her abilities, she was isolated. Sure, Ursula tried to overthrow King Triton and kill Eric and Ariel, but Ariel needs to take some responsibility here.

Ultimately, Ursula was extremely clear about the terms of their contract. Ariel chose to accept those terms knowing what could happen, so Ursula shouldn't be too faulted for everything that happened afterwards.

HATED THEM: Hans

When Hans turned out to be the villain of Frozen, fans were shocked. What made this extremely surprising was that at first, he seemed like the obvious but still perfect love interest for princess Anna. Moviegoers had gotten used to the quick true love at first sight introduction that these kinds of movies had.

It was later revealed that he was only pursuing her for a chance at power, willing to let her die if it meant his plans going forward.Hans goes further than many other villains have gone, almost killing the two heroes of the story. Fans couldn't help but hate him as he delivered the line "Oh Anna. If there was only someone out there who loved you."

FELT BAD FOR THEM: Edgar Balthazar

Technically speaking, the villain in the Aristocats is Edgar, the butler. Everyone can admit that trying to kill cats is pretty awful, but think about Edgar's situation here: After years of servitude, working tirelessly as a butler for Madame Adelaide Bonfamille, he overhears her planning her will. She has decided that she is going to leave her entire fortune to her cats, with Edgar being the backup.

Imagine hearing that after years of hard work and devotion, your employer would rather leave money to cats (who have no use for money) than to you. Anyone would go crazy in that situation and one can't help but feel a little bad for Edgar.

HATED THEM: Lotso

Lotso in Pixar's Toy Story 3

A recent trend in Disney movies is to give the villain a change for a redemption arc. This was the case for villain Gabby Gabby in Toy Story 4but not the case for Lotso in Toy Story 3Whereas Gabby Gabby saw the error of her ways, Lotso stayed evil until the end, relentless in his mission to torture and kill Andy's toys.

Even after Woody and Buzz save Lotso from certain death, he abandons them leaving them to the incinerator. His pure brutality and viciousness secures his spot as one of the most hated Disney villains of all time.

FELT BAD FOR THEM: Captain Hook

Upon close examination, one might decide that Captain Hook really isn't the villain in Peter Pan because truth be told, this villain is guilty of being an adult in a world run by children. Peter is constantly harassing him and playing tricks on him. While it's not exactly clear how the rivalry between Peter and Hook started, it is clear that Peter chopped off his hand and fed it to a hungry crocodile during a duel.

Captain Hook must have tasted good, because Tick-Tock the crocodile, who also happened to swallow a clock, relentlessly pursues Hook and tries to eat him at every opportunity. The sound of the clock's ticking as the crocodile approaches terrifies Hook, and Peter Pan enjoys his fear a great deal. Upon reviewing the facts, one can't help but feel bad for this "villain."

HATED THEM: Gaston

Gaston flirting in Beauty and the Beast.

Beauty and the Beast's Gaston is a villain who is just a little too real. He is a narcissist and a misogynist who believes that women exist solely for his pleasure. He is only interested in physical beauty and constantly pursues Belle, despite her protests. He insults her for thinking and insists she be his domesticated wife. When she refuses, Gaston decides to pay someone to lock her father Maurice up in an asylum and only release him if Belle agrees to marry him.

But this isn't the end of Gaston's evil deeds. He attacks the beast, who isn't even in a fighting mood. After Gaston forces his hand, the beast fights back but spares Gaston's life, telling him to leave. Gaston repays him by stabbing him in the back - literally. Thankfully, he fell off the castle and was never seen again.

FELT BAD FOR THEM: Te Ka

Te Ka crawls toward Moana

In Moana, Te Ka is a fiery creature who intends to rain fire on mankind. She believes that humans are not deserving of the gifts given to them and seeks to destroy all. However, it is revealed that Te Ka was originally Te Fiti, who brings beauty, life, and love to the world before her heart was stolen from her.

Once Moana restores her heart, she is immediately transformed back into the loving Te Fiti. She isn't to blame for her actions, as mankind did indeed deserve to be punished this time around.

HATED THEM: Governor Ratcliffe

Governor Ratcliffe in the Disney movie Pochahontas

Governor Ratcliffe is a revolting, greedy, money obsessed colonist. Like Beauty and the Beast's Gaston, Pocahontas' Governor Ratcliffe feels a little too real for comfort. He is xenophobic and targets the native people, calling them all savages.

His goal is to kill all of the natives and steal their land and its resources. He even says that he will hang anyone who refuses to kill the natives. This disgusting person is hated by anyone and everyone who grew up with Disney movies, and they can't be blamed at all.

FELT BAD FOR THEM: Scar

Scar getting pounced by Simba in The Lion King

In the Lion King, Mufasa rules the land. Audiences are told Mufasa is a great king, but they're never really shown it. For one thing, he ostracizes the hyenas (who live in hunger and scqualor) and treats his majordomo Zazu as a glorified babysitter. The one who suffered Mufasa's wrath the worst, though, is Scar. But before anything else, one must know Scar's backstory.

According to the spin-off series The Lion Guard, Scar was born with the name Askari. Askari was led into a trap by a strange lion, which resulted in a cobra biting his eye. The strange lion offered Askari a deal: If he agreed to try and overthrow Mufasa as king, he would be cured of the cobra's bite which left venom in his body. Instead of accepting this offer, Askari killed the strange lion and the cobra. He tells Mufasa what happened, but the king couldn't be bothered, apparently. Mufasa's response to Askari's story  is to rename him Scar, leading Scar to develop a deep hatred for Mufasa and a desire to be king. With a brother like Mufasa, can anyone really blame Scar for the whole wildebeest stampede?
