Disney's most recent movie has sent the world abuzz with discussion. Between the catchy songs, mysterious magic, and exploration of generational trauma, there is a lot to unpack in Encanto.

There were a few expectations that viewers were surprised to see were not met, however. Disney tends to follow a specific formula for a majority of their movies, and this has led viewers to often guess how things are going to work out. When Encanto went in a different direction than that norm, skipping over common tropes, viewers were pretty happy about it.

The Mismatched Duo

In any Disney movie, you are likely to see two characters with conflicting personalities that must make it work in order to achieve a specific goal. Viewers have seen it with Rapunzel and Flynn in Tangled, Moana and Maui in Moana, Marlin and Dory in Finding Nemo, and Barley and Ian in Onward - just to name a few!

Redditor Renee5322 was pleasantly surprised to see that this dynamic was left out of Encanto, stating it was "getting SO old, even though I loved [those] movies."

The Classic Villain

Disney is known for its villains, but Encanto steered away from this with Abuela. While fans do have some unpopular opinions about Abuela, she was not a bad or malicious person. Mirabel instead had to defeat the generational trauma that was hurting her family.

User TheStant felt that the fact there was "no real villain" was one of their favorite parts of the movie. It certainly made watching more interesting, as audiences wondered where the central conflict was going to appear from.

The Death Of A Central Character

User TheStant also felt that the movie's lack of a "death that was super central" to the plot added some value to the film. While Abuelo passes away long before Mirabel is born, it is not the same kind of death that viewers have seen from Disney movies such as Big Hero 6.

A more prominent death in the movie would have distracted from what the film was actually about. Mirabel has to find out her own value within a family full of magical powers, and a death would not have served toward that purpose.

The Extraordinary Main Character

Typically, the hero of the story contains some sort of special quality that others around them do not. Whether that is a magical ability, or a certain call or passion, the character must use this quality to save everyone.

Redditor No Incentive pointed out that Encanto was different because "the main character is, well, unspecial." While Mirabel is the brave main character of Encanto, she is the only member of her family who is like the rest of the town and has no magic power. She feels extremely ordinary next to her family, but that ends up being exactly what they all need.

The Love Interest

Disney has been steering away from the romance narrative for a while, but it still seems to be engrained in audiences' minds. Especially in "coming of age" stories like Mirabel's, there tends to be at least a hint at a love interest somewhere in the story.

But Redditor TheStant is pleased that this was left out of Encanto as well. It wouldn't have done to turn so many tropes upside down, but fall back on the same one that Disney has been trying to get away from. While a little romance is great, audiences want to keep hearing different stories.

The Big Adventure Out Into The World

Many viewers kept expecting Mirabel to take off on some long journey in order to save the miracle. It's no surprise they felt this way, as most Disney movies these days seem to revolve around the main character going on a far-off adventure. While characters taking off on these journeys has resulted in them singing some of the best Disney movie songs, Encanto proved that these types of adventures aren't always needed.

Redditor CrowNighter  said, "I'm personally a bit tired of the character having to trek mountains, cross seas, stumble through thick forests...." Movies like Onward and Moana saw big long journeys, but something about Encanto staying close to home kept the theme of family alive.

The Big Comical Battle

Movies like Coco and Finding Nemo have a moment at the end where everything breaks loose and the bad guys finally get their comeuppance. This is typically a funny scene where characters suddenly know kung-fu, or where an evil little girl gets sprayed in the face with water.

User Privy45 "expected a fight at the end" but was "pleasantly surprised" to see when things weren't going in that direction. While Mirabel does confront her Abuela, the fight is short before Casita falls down around them. The two end up resolving things later with a hug.

The Main Character's Huge Moment

User RedXerzk says "I love how Mirabel didn’t have to do anything bada** to earn her family’s approval." Mirabel simply had to be who she was which ultimately showed her family how much value they had even without powers.

Normally, the hero of a Disney movie will have a dramatic moment where they achieve outstanding feats in order to finally find who they are, but in Mirabel's case, she already knew who she was and it was enough.

The Dramatic Backstory Behind Character Conflict

Encanto: Mirabel and Isabela mend their ways.

Another revelation viewers expected was a deeper meaning into the conflict between Mirabel and Isabela. A typical Disney movie would reveal that Isabela had done something to hurt Mirabel a long time ago, or that Mirabel not getting a gift had harmed Isabela in some way.

"Is there a real conflict between Isabela and Mirabel? Or is it just regular sibling bickering??" asked a surprised mohicansgonnagetya, who had been expecting more from the sister's conflict.  Somehow, just two regular sisters who don't always get each other was a relief.

A Perfectly Happy Ending

Encanto: Mirabel looks at her new door handle.

Throughout the entire movie, viewers like Lebvidox were waiting for the moment that Mirabel would finally get her gift. In a typical Disney movie, everyone has to get a happy ending. Encanto bucked the trend because the credits rolled and Mirabel was still without her own magic.

Disney breaking viewers' expectations this way kept everyone on their toes, and stayed true to the theme of the movie, that the value of the family was never in their gifts but in their individual selves. It would ultimately make no sense for Mirabel to receive a gift when she had just done so much to prove that she didn't need one.
