Hollywood has adapted many fairy tales for both the big screen and small, but none have proven to be as popular as Cinderella. Disney and Rodgers and Hammerstein came together in 1997 for a new Cinderella for The Wonderful World of Disney. With this adaptation, Whitney Houston and the crew believed in creating a Cinderella for a new generation. Houston had even been lined up to play the titular role.

However, after Whitney decided that she would rather play the Fairy Godmother, she and the writers decided to bring Brandy Norwood onboard. After production was underway, the writers set out to make sure that this adaptation had the most diverse cast of any Cinderella story. An unnamed executive tried to push back against a Black lead, but the excellent plan to portray many cultures in Cinderella's setting prevailed.

Even the costumes were intended to show a world bursting with vivid colors. All the characters wear exquisite fashions thanks to costume designer Ellen Mirojnick. While most of the gowns and coats were fit for dancing the night away at the ball, there were several that stood out most.

Calliope's Dress For The Ball

Calliope (Veanne Cox) is the taller of Cinderella's two stepsisters. She wears zany fashions in keeping with her family's style, but her dress for the Prince's ball really stands out. Calliope is the only young woman on the dance floor to have such strong lime green hues as part of her blue ball gown. She doesn't exactly wow Prince Christopher, but she looks pretty.

Lionel's Business Attire

Lionel (Jason Alexander) works hard to keep things in working order at the palace, and he is a trusted confidant for the King, Queen, and Prince. It's important for Lionel to look good while he is doing his job.

His mauve coat pops with bright purple lapels and cuffs, and the texture of the coat looks both shimmery and durable. The leafy design is fitting for anyone who spends large amounts of time at a palace.

The Queen's Dress At The Palace

Queen Constantina (Whoopi Goldberg) wears purple as a sign of royalty throughout the movie. As she discusses the Prince's future with King Maximillian (Victor Garber), the Queen's deep purple dress, with hints of gold, is absolutely stunning. It also has a lighter purple silk at the bottom of each sleeve, which also makes a statement.

Ellen Mirojnick revealed that the jewels in Goldberg's tiara were authentic, too. She shared that Goldberg was going to have faux jewels, but the actor wanted real ones. Eventually, Mirojnick and Goldberg managed to acquire $5 million worth of jewels from Harry Winston.

Minerva's Dress Around Town

Minerva (Natalie Reid) and Calliope are Cinderella's stepsisters. Both of them soften to Cinderella's dreamy approach to romance and love. The stepsisters are eager to dance with the Prince, but they stand out at the ball for the wrong reasons. They are loud and obnoxious everywhere they go, especially when they are milling about town and shopping before the ball is even announced.

Minerva's dress for her everyday errands is so fun, though. Its deep orange, lavender, and green hues swirl into a full skirt. Minerva's green hat has her curls spilling out of the top. This is her best fashion moment of the movie.

The King's Jacket For The Ball

The King and Queen both command attention with their looks for the grand ball, but this is one of the King's best looks in the movie. He and Queen Constantina are coordinated with similar sashes. While the Queen wears a royal blue dress, King Maximillian has a strong teal color coming through in his shiny jacket.

Sitting next to his gorgeous wife, King Maximillian is sure to stand out among the sea of blue on the floor of the ballroom.

Prince Christopher's Wedding Suit

As dashing as he looks at the ball, Prince Christopher (Paolo Montalban) appears to be the most handsome man in the town on his wedding day. Brandy's beautiful white wedding dress complements the Prince's cream-colored suitcoat and vest. The flecks of gold speak to Prince Christopher's royalty, and his outfit matches his happiness on a special day.

Stepmother's Outfit For The Ball

The evil stepmother's outfit for the ball is one of the most creative in this Cinderella story. Perhaps to be competitive with Queen Constantina, the stepmother wears a royal blue gown and fascinator.

The color borders on indigo and has bold pieces of gold. The best part of the ensemble is the dress's bodice, which looks like a collection of jewels underneath the stepmother's statement necklace.

The handsome Prince is nothing without the beautiful Cinderella. She is breathtaking in her wedding gown, veil, and tiara. The title character is glowing on her wedding day, and the traditional gown and train combination suits her. Her delicate necklace and signature long gloves complete the look.

The Fairy Godmother's Ensemble

This version of Cinderella has one of the most fashionable fairy godmothers ever. Portrayed by Whitney Houston, the Fairy Godmother wears a long, flowing gold gown that might remind viewers a bit of Glenda's dress in The Wizard of Oz, except this one is more of a straight skirt.

The Fairy Godmother has jewels around the turtleneck of the gown and a matching cape that flows behind her as she grants Cinderella a magical night. Her clothing is aptly backing up her point that magical wishes can come true. Ellen Mirojnick had said that she took Gustav Klimt's "Woman in Gold" portrait as her inspiration for Houston's costuming, using the artist's color palette and patterning to help create the iconic look.

Cinderella's Ball Gown

The best outfit in Cinderella is most definitely Cinderella's pale blue ball gown. Brandy reminds viewers somewhat of the animated Cinderella's gown, but she makes the look all her own with her grace and beauty. When coming up with this design, Ellen Mirojnick recalled, "We did the sketch for that blue dress first. I knew that I wanted a peplum. I knew I wanted the shape of the shoulder and the bodice to be particular, and I knew I wanted the shape of the big, beautiful skirt...she came in and tried it on for the first time, and it was heaven before me."

The gown, gloves, and glass slippers fit perfectly and set Cinderella apart from everyone else at the grand ball. She looks exactly like the royalty that she is destined to be.
