Disney CEO Bob Chapek hints at more Premier Access offerings for Disney+ in the future, similar to Mulan. Last year, Disney launched their very own streaming service and marketed it as the one-stop shop for all things Mouse House. Since its debut, Disney+ has amassed a healthy number of subscribers, but many have noted its initial struggles with original content. Save for the live-action Star Wars series The Mandalorian and the filmed version of the hit Broadway musical Hamilton, Disney+ has mainly relied on past content to win over its subscribers.

At least, that was the case until late summer. Due to the coronavirus pandemic constantly forcing studios to push back their major releases, Disney opted to send Mulan straight to Disney+ in September as part of a "Premier Access" promotion. As movie theaters had planned for Mulan to be one of the films helping revive them following unprecedented shutdowns, it was a shocking move on Disney's part. At the time, Chapek insisted this would be a onetime occurrence, but now that seems less certain.

As part of Disney's Q4 earnings call, Chapek appeared to hint that more Disney+ Premier Access releases could be on the way. While Chapek didn't elaborate on what movies could fall under this strategy, Chapek said, "There's going to be a role for it strategically in our portfolio of offerings." Chapek also said more information about the future of Premier Access will be made available on Disney's Investor Day on December 10.

While it isn't completely clear how well Mulan has performed through its Premier Access debut, Disney has so far presented it as a resounding success. Therefore, it's no surprise that the studio is looking to create more Premier Access offerings. From a business standpoint, it makes sense: By offering movie theater-worthy content directly onto their streaming service, audiences might be more inclined to subscribe, especially if they feel these films are worth the extra $29.99. This also comes after Disney announced its intention to focus more on streaming in the future; clearly, the studio feels good about its new release strategy.

This, of course, begs a major question: What movies could be herded into Disney+'s Premier Access format? While Soul will be a movie headed straight to Disney+ as opposed to theaters, it won't feature the additional Premier Access price tag. Meanwhile, Mulan was expected to rake in some decent figures at the box office, which is why it cost $29.99 to purchase. Going by that logic, Disney might only send select big budget films to Premier Access. This could extend to other live-action remakes like the upcoming Little Mermaid, though it still seems unlikely that Marvel movies could follow this format. Chapek will share more next month during the Investor Day, and perhaps he'll even have some upcoming titles for Premier Access by then. Only time will tell.
