On Sunday, February 9th, 2020 the 92nd Oscars will take place in Hollywood, California. This year, several nominations have been made on behalf of Disney films. The songs “I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away” from Toy Story 4 (2019) and “Into the Unknown” from Frozen 2 (2019) received nominations for Best Original Song. In the category of Best Visual Effects, Disney has three nominations of Avengers: Endgame (2019), The Lion King (2019) and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019).

As the ceremony is right around the corner, what better time than now to reminisce on the past victories of Disney at the Oscars. For those with a Disney+ subscription, many of Disney’s most critically successful films are available to watch. Here is a list of Disney’s past Oscar winners, available on Disney+.

Lion King (1994)

As previously mentioned the recent reboot of this film starring Donald Glover and Beyoncé is nominated at this year's Oscars. Of course, the film that inspired this modern revision, The Lion King (1994) was a hit among audiences and critics alike.

The film would go on to be considered a “classic” work of the studio. At the Oscars of 1995 the film would win Best Original Song for “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” and Best Original Score by Hans Zimmer.

Coco (2017)

Coco (2017) is the Disney and Pixar film that explores the beautiful and rich culture of Mexico through the eyes of a young boy who is passionate about music. It is a true feel-good film that pulls at the heartstrings with a story of the bond family members share.

Coco also features infectious songs and dazzling colors. At the 2018 Oscars, Coco took home the awards for Best Original Song “Remember Me”, and Best Animated Feature Film.

Mary Poppins (1964)

There’s a reason this famous Disney film is still revered today as a classic piece for Disney fans everywhere. Mary Poppins (1964) was a homerun at its corresponding Oscar ceremony.

This film would claim a total of thirteen nominations ultimately winning four. Julie Andrews won Best Actress as well as the film earning Best Film Editing, Best Effects, Best Original Score, and Best Original Song for “Chim Chim Cher-ee”.

Frozen (2013)

Another Best Animated Feature win for Disney! Frozen (2013) was a box office hit as well as a success among critics. This film would be historically successful for the company both critically and commercially.

Fans everywhere can be seen sporting the Halloween costumes and singing the songs with its introduction of two new faces to the Disney Princess canon. Frozen won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film as well as Best Original Song for “Let It Go”.

Bao (2018)

Audiences were enchanted by this short which premiered as the featured short film before Incredibles 2 (2018). Bao (2018) tells the endearing tale of a mother whose baby grows up to fast for her liking and follows her personal struggle of having an empty nest after he’s all grown up. 

A beautiful peek inside Chinese culture that is both heartwarming and relatable across all cultures and races. Bao would take home the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film in 2019, an emotional win for director Domee Shi and producer Becky Neimen-Cobb.

Geri’s Game (1997)

Disney+ offers a plethora of Pixar favorites all packaged into one convenient category. Here, one may find all of the “shorts” that bring back childhood memories such as Geri’s Game (1997).

This short features a comical story of an old man who sparks up a game of chess in the park that provokes a fierce competition, only to reveal that he was playing against himself the entire time. This hilarious and lovable short film took home the Oscar for Best Short Film in 1998.

The Little Mermaid (1989)

Another loveable Princess Film for Disney; a fan favorite, a classic, a film everyone remembers so well… The Little Mermaid (1989) took home two wins out of three nominations at the 1990 Oscars.

This film ticks all the boxes for what makes a Disney movie great: amazing songs, beautiful and colorful visuals and memorable characters. The Little Mermaid won the Oscar for Best Original Score by Alan Menken and Best Original Song “Under the Sea”.

Finding Nemo (2003)

At the 2004 Oscar ceremony Finding Nemo (2003) was fairly successful, winning one out of its three nominations that year. The film took home the award for Best Animated Feature; not too shabby!

The film received several different considerations with nominations across many of the most esteemed award ceremonies like the Golden Globes and the BAFTA Awards.

Beauty and the Beast (1991)

Featuring some of the most iconic music in Disney history, Beauty and the Beast (1991) received several Oscar nominations in 1992, most of which pertain to said music.

The film received a total of six Oscar nominations three of which were for Best Original Song; the winner being “Beauty and the Beast.” Alan Menken also received the award for Best Original Score for the film!

Pinocchio (1940)

Disney+ is great for those who wish to travel back in Disney history to watch the films that warm our hearts and deliver again and again on that timeless “Disney Magic”. Pinocchio (1940) was a hit at the 13th Academy Awards.

It won both of its nominations that year for Best Original Score as well as Best Original Song for the tune which would go on to become the staple of Disney’s brand: “When You Wish Upon a Star”.
