Disney’s adaption of Peter Pan flew onto the big screen in 1953. Based on J.M. Barrie’s play and novel of the same name, this animated musical follows a girl and her brothers who are swept into the magical world of Neverland by a boy named Peter Pan.

While the movie is enchanting, there are many details of it that don’t add up. It’s worth noting that we will be looking exclusively at the original Disney adaption of Peter Pan. Any outside material that expands the story will not be considered.

Additionally, we’re acknowledging that we're going to be picky. Peter Pan is a fictional work and the creators were allowed to do whatever they wanted, but it’s far too fun to point out the film's little flaws.

Off we go to Neverland! Here are ten things that don’t make sense about Peter Pan.

How Did Peter Pan Know The Darling Family Believed In Him?

Disney Peter Pan and Wendy Animated

Peter Pan’s narrator explains that the titular character visited the Darling Family because he knew they — specifically the kids — wholeheartedly believed him. But how would he know this? Does Peter Pan have some sort of sixth sense?

The movie also implies that the Darling children aren’t the only kids Peter has visited, so there must be some way he knows who is worth taking to Neverland. We just don't know how.

Where Did Neverland Come From?

Somehow Wendy knows about Peter Pan even though she has never visited Neverland herself. Even if the movie had explained how she knew it existed, however, that still wouldn't answer how Neverland came to be in the first place.

Neverland is a unique and magical world with pirates and mermaids. Did it literally just spring out of nowhere? Is the whole adventure in the kids' imagination? Is Peter just another lost boy from the real world who got trapped there? The origins are mysterious.

How Was A Dog The Nursemaid?

The Darling children have something even better than a human caretake; They have a nursemaid dog named Nana.

This pup is incredibly intelligent and cute, however, she really shouldn’t be able to hold the career she does. Additionally, Mr. Darling is far too mean to her. Dogs should be free, not forced to serve a group of energetic children.

Why Is The Crocodile After Hook?

A crocodile has got to eat, so why is Peter Pan’s crocodile — commonly referred to as Tick-Tock — only interested in chomping down on Hook?

The crocodile is polite to Mr. Smee and goes away when he shoos him. He also never makes an attempt to eat Peter or the lost boys. What about Hook makes him so hungry?

Everyone Is A Casual Murderer

Peter Pan

Peter Pan is probably a lot darker than you remember. While it’s no secret that Hook is a bad guy, it turns out that even the “good” characters are morally corrupt.

Jealous that Peter brought a girl to Neverland, the mermaids try to drown her and have no problem admitting it. Before this, Tinkerbell tries to get the lost boys to kill Wendy. She, too, has no trouble confirming that her intentions were murderous.

Is Peter Pan Actually A Bad Guy?

While other versions of Peter Pan have framed the boy who wouldn’t grow up as a villain, Disney’s adaption does not. They try to prove to the audience that Peter Pan is a good guy, however, his actions prove differently.

The lost boys had to come from somewhere. Did Peter steal them from their families? Being in Neverland too long has made the boys all about their mothers, tragically.

While Wendy explains to her mom later that the lost boys just weren’t ready to go home, they wouldn’t have ever been able to get home if they didn't know where that was. Peter’s a bad person for kidnapping the boys and making them into loyal followers. Additionally, Peter's pretty mean to Tink, Wendy, and most of all, Captain Hook.

Why Does Tinkerbelle Tell Captain Hook Where Peter Pan Is Hiding?

Disney Peter Pan Tinkerbell Fairy

Tinkerbelle gives Hook incredibly specific directions on how he can locate Peter Pan. Sure, she’s mad at Peter for flirting with Wendy, but is she so vengeful that she would turn Peter over to his archnemesis?

Tink makes Hook promise that he won’t harm Peter Pan, but if this is her true desire, why does she give Hook the location of Pan in the first place? Tinkerbelle’s an adult; She knows that Hook is up to no good.

How Does The Bomb Not Kill Peter Pan?

Hook sends Peter a bomb disguised as a present. He pretends its from Wendy and writes that he shouldn’t open it until 6 o’clock.

Tinkerbelle chases after Peter to warn him about the bomb, but she is too late. Even though she gets ahold of the bomb, she doesn't fly very far. Peter should be dead, but he's not. Somehow he escapes unscathed.

Tinkerbell should also be dead from the explosion, being that she was literally holding the bomb in her hands. When Peter expresses how much she means to him, however, she glows back to life.

Captain Hook Should Be Dead

Peter isn't the only character who shouldn't have survived.

Captain Hook gets beat up on throughout the entirety of the film. Tick-tock swallows Hook multiple times, Peter is constantly jabbing at the pirate with a sword, and even Mr. Smee makes several mistakes that should result in Hook’s death. For example, he accidentally hits the captain in the head with a hammer and pours boiling hot water on him — and this is all just in one day. How is Hook alive after all of this? Because really, he shouldn't be.

Did Mr. Darling Forget About Peter Pan?

At the end of the film, the Darling kids get back from their adventure. Wendy tells her parents all about it, and that's when they catch a glimpse of a ship in the clouds. Mr. Darling says that he feels he's seen it before, which perhaps implies that when he was younger, he had journeyed with Peter Pan.

While the movie seems to suggest that Mr. Darling had forgotten about Peter because he had grown-up, it doesn't make a lot of sense. How could anyone ever forget Neverland, especially if their kids talked about it all the time? Additionally, in the sequel, Wendy remembers Peter as an adult, so there has to be a bigger explanation to Mr. Darling's wiped memory.
