Disney Parks announces the Hong Kong Disneyland theme park will be temporarily closed again this week despite its safe reopening in September. Like most other companies, Disney faced huge losses after the COVID-19 pandemic forced its films' release dates to be delayed and its theme parks to close. Currently, the Disney theme parks in Tokyo, Shanghai, and Orlando have reopened with safety precautions in place, while Disneyland Paris and the Disneyland Resort in California have remained closed. With Disneyland Hong Kong’s closure this week, half of Disney’s theme park properties will be shuttered worldwide.

According to the official Disney Parks public affairs Twitter, Hong Kong Disneyland will be closing on Wednesday, December 2 as required by the government’s newly implemented preventative efforts after COVID-19 cases increased in Hong Kong over the past week. This will be the third shutdown for Hong Kong Disneyland this year, after its first closure in January, then again in July following its reopening in June. Though Disney has promised to reopen the park as soon as health authorities determine its safety, it has not yet provided a reopening date for Hong Kong Disneyland. The pandemic has proved extremely difficult for Disney’s parks and experiences division. Disney has been forced to lay off over 28,000 employees due to park closures and has been heavily criticized for the reopening of Walt Disney World despite a high number of COVID cases in Florida. Hopefully, as Disney fans from all across the world adhere to COVID-19 safety instructions, cases will lower by 2021 and guests can return to all of Disney’s theme parks next year, especially since there are a number of new attractions planned to debut.
