Disney Channel's new animated comedy, The Owl House, made its big debut at New York Comic Con, and Screen Rant has an exclusive clip from the delightfully magical (and slightly wicked) new show. While the House of Mouse may be hard at work building their extensive lineup of Disney+ content, they haven't forgotten about good old fashioned television. In fact, they're even gearing up to launch a brand new animated comedy for the Disney Channel in 2020.
As revealed during its NYCC panel, The Owl House stars Sarah-Nicole Robles (The Boss Baby) as a regular teenager, Luz, who finds herself whisked away to a magical world of witches, wizards, and supernatural creatures. After making tentative friends with a sassy witch named Eda (voiced by Wendie Malick), Luz becomes the witch's apprentice in an effort to one day become a witch herself, despite her complete and apparent lack of magical powers of her own.
The Owl House is full of vivid imagery, fast-paced humor, and excellent voice acting, and it's all on full display in the exclusive clip below. Wendie Malick (Hot in Cleveland, Just Shoot Me) is always a delight, and she's clearly suited to voice Eda, who channels a nonchalant aloofness and sarcastic charm that's sure to be entertaining for viewers of all ages. Luz's endearing naivete is a perfect foil for Eda's more adult sensibilities; throw in an adorable warrior kitty cat wearing a skull helmet voiced by Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls), and you've got a recipe for comedy success.
Created by Dana Terrace, The Owl House is her next project after the successful DuckTales reboot, which revived the beloved series with a modern spin and a strong reverence towards the source material. She also worked on the beloved Gravity Falls series, and The Owl House looks to continue her streak of success with sly humor, clever dialogue, and strong storytelling. The art direction is being handled by Ricky Cometa, a veteran of Steven Universe, one of the most critically-acclaimed shows on television, animated or otherwise.
The Owl House has a strong pedigree of creative talent on its side, and fans can't wait to see more. Disney may appear to have all its cards invested in Marvel, Star Wars, and Disney+, but there's still plenty of room for creativity in its other outlets; with a little luck, The Owl House could be a true breakout hit for the Disney Channel when it launches in January 2020.
