Disney has released the final trailer for its next live-action fairy tale film, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. The Mouse House's Nutcracker adaptation was directed by Lasse Hallström (The Cider House Rules, Chocolat), before scheduling conflicts prevented him from overseeing the film's reshoots and Joe Johnston (The Rocketeer, Captain America: The First Avenger) stepped in to helm additional photography. Hallström and Johnston have agreed to share directing credit on the movie.

Written by relative newcomer Ashleigh Powell and Oscar-winner Tom McCarthy (Spotlight, Christopher Robin), The Nutcracker and the Four Realms follows young Clara (Mackenzie Foy) as she journeys to a parallel world on Christmas Eve, via a special key gifted to her by her late mother. There, she is aided by a solider named Philip (Jayden Fowora-Knight) and the Sugar Plum Fairy (Keira Knightley) on a quest to restore order to their world by facing off against Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren), the ruler of the dangerous Fourth Realm.

After going nearly eight months without unveiling any new footage from The Nutcracker and the Four Realms following the teaser trailer's release last December, Disney has unveiled the movie's final trailer a mere month after the first full-length Nutcracker trailer dropped online. Take a look in the space below:

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms cast also includes the American Ballet Theatre's star performer Misty Copeland as "The Ballerina", along with Mexican entertainment industry superstar Eugenio Derbez as Hawthorn and future Star Wars: Episode IX star Richard E. Grant as Shiver. Most of these actors donned elaborate and colorful outfits crafted by Mad Max: Fury Road's Oscar winning costume designer Jenny Beavan, in order to bring their fantasy characters to life in the film.

As visually extravagant as The Nutcracker and the Four Realms looks in the final trailer, its commercial prospects are iffy at the moment. The film's budget hasn't been revealed yet, but it was clearly a costly production - even before Johnston carried out a month's worth of reshoots - and the initial response to the footage has been lukewarm, on the whole. Those sexual harassment allegations against Morgan Freeman (who plays Clara's godfather Drosselmeyer) aren't helping the movie's cause, either.

Still, the combination of the Disney brand and The Nutcracker ought to be enough to guarantee a decent opening weekend for The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, regardless of the critical reception. The film may yet have legs at the box office too, should more and more families decide to give it a look during the lead-up to this year's winter holiday frame.
